About The Position

Serves as the instructional leader for all alternative education programs in the District, specifically Central Academy of Success, Tahlequah Alternative High School Evening Program, C.C.R.E.A., and Adult Basic Education. Is responsible for general welfare of staff and students. Carries out the educational programs adopted by the District in accordance with State and Federal laws and regulations and the policies and regulations of the local Board of Education.

Requirements

  • Secondary Administrative Certification and a broad foundation of district school operations
  • Previous successful experience as a school administrator specifically in the supervision of students, implementation of state and federal requirements, and training/experience in alternative education.
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience is required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with school personnel, parents, community, and students.
  • Ability to be a “problem-solver” by means of a thorough knowledge and applications of district policies, Oklahoma school law, federal legislation.

Responsibilities

  • Administration and supervision of all alternative education programs.
  • Participates in District planning and decision making.
  • Assists in recruiting, screening, interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for positions on the school staff and in the orientation of new personnel.
  • Supervision of instruction in all alternative education programs.
  • Visits teachers, assuring that they have prepared lesson plans and well-developed objectives based on the Oklahoma C3 Skills and Common Core State Standards as well as the District curriculum, are using effective teaching methods and are well-prepared when substitute teachers are necessary.
  • Uses available resources and techniques to assist and stimulate teachers to improve instruction and develop professionally.
  • Provides for continuous staff development.
  • Assures that each staff member is made aware of and has access to the Policies and Procedures of the Board of Education.
  • Notifies them of all rules, orders and resolutions that may be adopted by the Board or issued by the Superintendent.
  • Communicates regularly with assigned staff through scheduled meetings, memos, and individual contacts.
  • Visits classrooms on a regular basis, other than for evaluations.
  • Assigns to teachers and other school employees within their jurisdiction such duties as are necessary to maintain proper discipline and supervision in the buildings and on the grounds, making efforts to equalize the work load in making such assignments.
  • Assures that teachers and other staff make accurate and timely reports.
  • Evaluates teachers and other staff members assigned to the alternative education program.
  • Makes appropriate recommendations for the dismissal of staff, following accepted procedures and guidelines.
  • Arranges for substitute teachers and helps them to function effectively.
  • Advises and assists teachers in working with difficult cases of discipline.
  • Engage in public relation activities to the community.
  • Act as liaison between alternative education and regular education programs and collaborate with Tahlequah High School administration.
  • Develops school rules and regulations using input from staff, students and parents which are in accordance with District policy and philosophy. These will be reviewed annually.
  • Conduct intake and screening process to determine eligibility of students before enrolling them into the appropriate alternative education program.
  • Complete written graduation plan for each student prior to scheduling them in classes.
  • Schedule student classes.
  • Maintain student records which are accurate and complete.
  • Maintains student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, affording due process to students when appropriate.
  • Arranges for and/or facilitates special learning experiences for students such as field trips, lectures, performances, extra-curricular activities, etc.
  • Provides supervision at school activities on a regular basis. Arrangements should be made for others to supervise when principal cannot be in attendance.
  • Ensures district attendance policy is adhered to by all students. Truant students are referred to district attorney for ticketing and truancy proceedings.
  • Participate in Truancy Court as necessary.
  • Assess student progress and assign grades for course completion.
  • Facilitate testing of all students to meet requirements of the State and local district.
  • Is responsible for public relations for alternative education programs.
  • Produces or arranges for the production of newsletters, bulletins, etc., to keep the public informed about activities within the school.
  • Acts as communication leader, serving as liaison between the school and community.
  • Facilitates and conducts conferences with parents when concerns arise about student discipline or academic performance, change of placement, IEP review, or any other issue that affects the educational environment.
  • Collaborate with state and local agencies serving youth.
  • Works cooperatively with auxiliary services such a Special Education, Food Service, Transportation and Maintenance. Provides support and supervision where appropriate.
  • Assists in the selection of and/or supervises the administration of any testing programs for Alternative education students.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, administration and maintenance of the school plant and equipment.
  • Supervises the assigned custodial staff to optimize the use of school facilities.
  • Assumes the responsibility to allocate classroom space.
