About The Position

We are excited to invite a passionate and experienced Director of Afterschool & Recreation to join our team! Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is searching for a Director of Afterschool & Recreation to manage the day-to-day operations of a DYCD/DOMH after-school Program located in a Family Shelter in the Jamaica area of Queens, NY. The Director will oversee program development, staff management, and compliance with relevant regulations, and ensure that our services meet the unique needs of our families. ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS: Homes for the Homeless operates shelters for families experiencing homelessness in NYC. Our family residences are more than just a place to sleep. Families can make the most of their stay through accessing an array of onsite programs. Many of these programs are also available to people living in the local community. Our goal is to have a positive impact so families can thrive long after they leave our shelters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in child development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation, or a related field.
  • Two years of direct experience working with children less than 13 years of age.
  • At least one year in a supervisory capacity in a childcare program or related field of work.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with the standards under DOMH, DYCD and OCFS-SACC regulations, to ensure the program is in compliance.
  • Supervise a team of youth workers and recreation coordinators.
  • Collaborate with staff to recruit participants between the ages of 5 and 16.
  • Create innovative and age-appropriate curriculums, enrichment activities and theme-based projects.
  • Ensure that the program reflects the interests and choices of the children.
  • Maintain an emotionally and physically safe environment.
  • This position requires occasional evening and weekend work to accommodate program schedules and community events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
