About The Position

Position Summary: The Director of Accounting oversees all accounting operations for the Agency, including the preparation of periodic financial reports, the maintenance of robust accounting systems, and the implementation of internal controls designed to mitigate financial risk. This role is responsible for enhancing the accuracy and integrity of reported financial results and ensuring full compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The Director leads and manages all accounting functions, which may include general and cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. This position also develops and implements effective strategies for account reconciliation, financial reporting, and continuous improvement of accounting processes across the organization. This position is in the office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting plus three to five years of experience; CPA or MBA and at least three years of experience; or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Five to seven years of nonprofit accounting experience is preferred.
  • At least three years of prior management experience is preferred.
  • Federal Single audit experience required.
  • Working knowledge of Colorado Medicaid/Medicare billing preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for collaborating with various levels of staff, including program managers, directors, and board members.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, delegate tasks, and meet deadlines while handling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Manage projects and functions, prepare reports, make decisions, solve problems, and maintain strong internal controls.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.
  • Frequently sitting and typing.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and use standard office equipment.
  • Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 (proof required), subject to legally required exemptions.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for oversight of day-to-day operations of Accounting Department
  • Supervises the following accounting areas: - Accounts Payable - Accounts Receivable - Cash Management - Operating Accounting - Payroll
  • Reviews and/or posts journal entries and subsidiary ledger transactions.
  • Reviews and approves daily accounts payable processing.
  • Coordinates month-end closing process, including revenue recognition based on budget guidelines and restrictions imposed by donors and funding organizations
  • Monitors program revenues and expenses
  • Assists with review of allocations of staff time, facilities, and other allocated costs.
  • Oversees monthly Investment journal entries and Schedule of Investments reporting.
  • General Ledger account reconciliations.
  • Manages releases of restricted funding against expenditures.
  • Completes the monthly Endowment Roll Forward and Board Investment Summary reports.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements including variance analysis; makes recommendations for resolution of ongoing issues.
  • Provides oversight of payroll processing and submission.
  • Monitors cash flow and ensures daily bank activities are completed including transmission of positive pay files, ACH uploads, bank transfers, and stop payments
  • Leads the annual organizational budgeting process.
  • Coordinates the following in partnership with CFO: - Annual Organization Audit, Single Audit, and associated schedule preparation - Annual 990 and 990T returns - Periodic federal funding audits. - Quarterly financial reviews
  • Leads the schedule and documentation preparation for the annual Organization audit.
  • Provides oversight of accounting for fixed assets and net asset Roll Forward reporting.
  • Completes accounting process review and recommendations for improvement.
  • Oversees CareLogic/Client Database setup and financial reporting requirements and serves as the liaison between accounting and medical billing.
  • Administers accounting software and coordinates its interface with other JFS databases.
  • Serves as a resource for managers and other staff concerning accounting and finance issues
  • Monitors internal controls to ensure adequate procedures are in place.
  • Provides presentations as needed at Board and Committee meetings.
  • Ad-hoc analysis as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • This position is responsible for supervising staff, including assigning work; providing coaching, feedback, and support; conducting performance evaluations; and supporting professional development.
