About The Position

This position aims to support inclusive learning environments for students and provide the necessary resources for students with disabilities to succeed in their academic programs. The Director of Access & Disability Resources manages the daily operations of the Access & Disability Resources department in order to ensure equitable access for qualified students with disabilities to courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities offered through Saint Paul College. The Director leads a team that provides holistic support to students with disabilities through all stages of their educational experience at Saint Paul College. This includes providing reasonable accommodations, working with faculty to create inclusive learning experiences for students, coaching students on navigating challenges and self-advocacy, highlighting resources and opportunities, selecting assistive technology, and upholding civil rights. The Director serves as a campus expert on access and disability and works with others to promote sensitivity to and awareness of disability issues. This position requires a knowledge of disability law and ensures that the campus is in compliance with legal requirements. The person in this position must understand data privacy laws and established Saint Paul College policies.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience working in disability services (A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of experience).
  • Ability to collaborate with a team to assess and proactively support academic, social, and basic needs.
  • Ability to explain complex legal standards in plain language to faculty, staff, and students.
  • This position requires up-to-date knowledge of best practices in college disability offices, knowledge of disability culture, and understanding of federal and state laws that apply to services for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of best practices for universal design and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, religious, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of college students, staff, and faculty and their intersections with disability.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in rehabilitation services, education, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience working in an urban community and technical college.
  • Knowledge of adaptive technology.
  • Higher education experience in areas of accessibility services, advising or career and educational planning; experience collaborating with faculty.
  • Experience with conflict resolution and mediation between students, faculty, and administration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic planning and implantation of initiatives, policies, procedures for Access and Disability Resources
  • Lead, supervise, and direct department and contract personnel, including but not limited to hiring, coaching and developing, promoting, rewarding, assigning and reviewing work, directing work, approving transfers, disciplining, suspending, discharging, and adjusting grievances to ensure that staff are skilled and available as needed, collective bargaining agreements and Minnesota State policies and procedures are implemented and appropriately enforced, and projects are staffed correctly to meet deadlines and stay within budget.
  • Identify mechanisms to increase community awareness of accessibility and promote inclusive practices on campus.
  • Assess the effectiveness of office services and promote equity on campus.
