The department of Supplemental Instruction (SI) within the Division of Academic Affairs is a learning support program that provides weekly group study sessions for students taking bottleneck, key gateway, or historically difficult courses. It is led by exceptional students who have mastered the course materials. The Supplemental Instruction leaders are trained to facilitate group sessions where students can meet to improve their understanding of the course materials, review and discuss important concepts, develop study strategies, and prepare for exams. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Director of Academic Support (Administrator II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Under the strategic direction of the Associate Vice President for Student Success and Academic Support, the Director of Academic Support is responsible for overseeing, managing, and developing all aspects of the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program and the University Learning Center (ULC). This position requires a strong commitment to student success, effective leadership skills, and a comprehensive understanding of academic support programs. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field such as education, counseling, or student development, along with a minimum of five years of related experience in academic support programs, supplemental instruction, or learning center management.
  • A successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of best practices in academic support services, including supplemental instruction, tutoring, and embedded tutoring, as well as student learning and student success initiatives.
  • The position requires strong leadership and administrative skills, with proven experience managing, leading, and motivating a team of professional staff and instructional student assistants.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of assessment and evaluation practices used to measure program effectiveness and student outcomes, as well as experience or familiarity with budget management and resource allocation.
  • Experience in program management, strategic planning, and data-driven decision-making is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with a wide range of university and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of higher education principles, practices, and trends—particularly those related to student retention and student success models—is highly desirable.
  • The ideal candidate will also have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize both short- and long-term goals, and adapt effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.

  • Ability to effectively select, supervise, and train both represented and non-represented staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments, as well as assessing staff performance.
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC) Supplemental Instruction (SI) accreditation processes is also desirable.
