Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in facilities management and engineering including supervisory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering (P.E.).
  • Master’s degree.
  • Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM) certification by the American Hospital Association (AHA).
  • Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and direct the functions of engineering and building operations to achieve objectives and comply with regulatory requirements. Interpret requirements and regulations of accrediting and regulatory agencies and national, state, and local electrical, building, and plumbing codes for department staff.
  • Plan for major repairs and investigate needs in collaboration with the administration and the management team. Coordinate and communicate planned shutdowns to ensure the work is completed safely and in a timely manner. Inspect buildings, grounds, and the power plant, evaluate condition and needs, and take or recommend corrective measures to ensure conformance with established standards and guidelines.
  • Develop, establish, and maintain an effective and efficient preventive maintenance program. Schedule and prioritize repair and maintenance work and projects to minimize disruption of hospital operations. Provide guidance for the development and implementation of a hospital equipment inventory control program that will meet the requirements of regulatory, accreditation, and licensing agencies to ensure a safe and secure environment. Develop, implement, and monitor workload service standards and productivity reports.
  • Direct and maintain plant engineering capability for all health care facilities. Develop systems for efficient and effective utilization of all utilities such as gas, water, and electricity.
  • Develop, implement, and interpret departmental policies and procedures to ensure safety and compliance, keeping staff informed of changes. Develop and implement performance improvement programs for the department for continuous process improvement. Assist in developing, delegating, and monitoring departmental goals, objectives, and programs, ensuring timely completion.
  • Prepare annual capital and operating budgets, using Intelligent Systems and Engineering Services (ISES) reports for facilities condition analysis, and ensure the department operates within allocated funds. Ensure ISES reports are tracked, updated, and shared with administration. Evaluate equipment acquisitions included in the annual capital equipment program prior to procurement by the purchasing department and implement cost-effective measures in department operations.
  • Maintain appropriate records and statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes and supervise the maintenance of complete and accurate records of time charges. Keep current files of schematic and engineering drawings of plant facilities and equipment, including specifications, operation, and maintenance manuals.
  • Interview, select, train, evaluate, and counsel staff in the Engineering department. Promote and encourage professional growth and development of personnel.
  • Lead a culture of safety through proactive risk mitigation and continuous quality improvement, taking measures to routinely evaluate regulatory readiness. Monitor and analyze safety and performance metrics to identify trends and implement corrective actions for staff and patients.
  • Oversee the development, coordination, and maintenance of daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of coverage and continuity of care across units.
  • Direct the implementation and oversight of MU Health Care time and attendance policies and practices.
  • May complete unit/department-specific duties as outlined in department documents.
