About The Position

The Director of Accounting provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the credit union’s accounting, financial reporting, and cash management functions. This role ensures accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across all financial operations while supporting organizational growth and sound fiscal management. The Director collaborates closely with the CFO, Controller, auditors, and cross-departmental partners to enhance reporting processes, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive data-informed decision-making. A key responsibility of this position is to modernize systems, implement automation, and lead process improvements that strengthen financial controls and reporting integrity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Ten (10) or more years of progressive experience in accounting and finance management, preferably within a financial institution or credit union.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven success in implementing process improvements and technology enhancements.
  • Advanced understanding of accounting principles, GAAP, and CECL requirements.
  • Proficiency with accounting and financial software systems; experience with ERP or core credit union systems preferred.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with expertise in Excel, financial modeling, and data visualization tools.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with a focus on collaboration and development.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting complex financial information to non-financial audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams and foster accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for offering Credit Union products and services to current and potential members.
  • Credit Union services are to be promoted using the “member benefit-based approach.”
  • Fully complies with all SRP Credit Union policies, procedures, guidelines, and service standards, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and OFAC Policies.
  • Represents the Credit Union professionally and courteously to members and potential members.
  • Provides prompt, efficient, accurate, and friendly service in processing transactions.
  • Oversee all accounting, financial reporting, and cash management activities to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
  • Provide strategic insights through financial analysis, variance reporting, and trend forecasting to support executive decision-making.
  • Lead efforts to automate and streamline outdated accounting processes for greater efficiency and accuracy.
  • Finalize and review monthly and quarterly financial reports, including variances, estimates and related schedules.
  • Ensure timely submission of all regulatory filings, including the NCUA Call Report, annual personal property returns, and other legal reports.
  • Support internal and external auditors, regulators, and examiners, ensuring readiness and accuracy during reviews and examinations.
  • Maintain adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and compliance with FAS ASC 326 (CECL guidance).
  • Evaluate, select, and implement new accounting technologies and systems to improve operational efficiency.
  • Partner with IT and vendors to develop procedures supporting system upgrades, process automation, and data integrity.
  • Establish and maintain quality control standards over financial transactions, documentation, and reporting accuracy.
  • Assist in formulating, updating, and enforcing accounting policies and procedures to safeguard financial records and assets.
  • Ensure sound procedures for financial record retention, destruction, and data security.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks while maintaining internal controls and audit readiness.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to operational accounting and financial reporting team members, promoting professional growth and collaboration.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to review performance, discuss improvements, and align goals with organizational strategy.
  • Ensure effective cross-training and knowledge transfer within the department.
