About the Position The Dir – Transportation Ops is responsible for managing multiple sites and multiple customers. This position manages Regional Transportation Managers and/or about $20M in revenue. This position is the fifth level of management in Kenco Transportation Service (KTS). This job leads transportation efforts, collaborates with carriers (both internal and external), customers, planners, and dispatchers to ensure the safe, effective, and secure transportation of customer products on time across the network. The Dir - Transportation Ops will work with the Sr Mgr(s) – Transportation and the Regional Transportation Managers to coach and mentor the team members on fundamental behaviors, safety, quality, operations, and continuous improvement to meet or exceed internal/external expectations. The Dir - Transportation Ops will partner with Sr Mgr(s) – Transportation in the implementation of process improvements through problem- solving or input from the team. Additionally, the Dir - Transportation Ops is expected to partner with the VP - Asset Transportation to develop and execute strategies that drive growth, increase profitability and provide critical leadership support to its employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Transportation or related equivalent years of experience required. Equivalent years of experience is defined as one year of professional experience for each year of college requested.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years related experience and/or training in a distribution or transportation environment.
  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations required.
  • Creating high alignment with and ability to influence internal and external partners
  • Detailed knowledge of financial planning, P&L analysis, and margin improvement required.
  • Ability to motivate, train, lead, and evaluate the performance of subordinates.
  • Highly proficient in the use of MS Office – Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, & Word.
  • Ability to develop presentations and present information professionally to internal and external management/customers.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and meet specific goals and deadlines.
  • Experience using warehouse, transportation, financial, and inventory management systems preferred.
  • Must have very strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate with tact, diplomacy, and authority, when necessary.
  • Must possess strong analytical abilities, organizational skills, and communication skills.
  • Must have a thorough transportation background and an understanding of efficient transportation principles.
  • Ability to read and write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Identify new business opportunities and grow business revenues and margins with existing customers.
  • Partner with VP of Asset Transportation to enforce compliance to (and establish where needed) SOP’s in the areas of driver routing/dispatch, fuel and materials usage, capacity planning, safety, employee relations and various other process areas.
  • Act as a strategic business partner with Kenco Logistics leadership
  • Perform P&L management, budgeting and forecasting.
  • Assess performance of employees and successfully manage team to achieve goals through effective conflict resolution, by promoting teamwork, and the use of performance management tools.
  • Build a strong relationship with customer key contacts through listening and understanding our customer’s environment.
  • Develop customer profile with business issues, opportunities, information flow, competitor environment, review process, contract, etc.
  • Present complete proposals and value solutions for our customers.
  • Develop and implement new transportation systems in partnership with IT
  • Manage asset management program including equipment procurement and maintenance
  • Drive process for carrier and mode selection to optimize freight spend.
  • Reviews tactical aspects of business profile, indexes, KPI results and other data to up-sell additional solutions.
  • Uses Lean Six Sigma tools to make decisions and improve operational efficiency.
  • Builds relationships with common carriers, manages their performance, and leverages these relationships to ensure all cost and quality requirements are met.
  • Manages transportation resources to ensure compliance with all policies, processes, and procedures required by Kenco, its customer, and all applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for data collection, analysis, and reporting of transportation metrics to drive continuous improvement and cost reduction initiatives related to assigned areas of responsibility and/or throughout the entire network.
  • Supports the distribution network to ensure that all customer goals are met.
