About The Position

In collaboration with other Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) staff, the Director works to establish structures of support for efficient and effective responses to local school needs so that school leaders can focus on effective teaching, learning, and student performance. This role serves as an important support for Principals as they work to create conducive conditions for teaching and learning at the highest levels. Also, the Director coaches, supports, and develops the capacity of team members to promote highly effective teaming, models effective leadership practices and encourages innovative approaches. The Director supports the mission, goals, and objectives of the district and provides leadership and guidance to promote high expectations, retains current knowledge of developments and trends in behavioral and social-emotional interventions and provides leadership in determining department direction and improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Educational Administration, Counseling, Social Work or a related field Required
  • No less than five years’ experience in an educational administrative or leadership role Required
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of best practices in student support and wraparound services, including but not limited to social and emotional learning needs, disciplinary practices and safe schools, Title IX supports, counseling and mental health, social and community supports and other partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to gain consensus, build teams and manage projects.

Responsibilities

  • Serves on the level-alike team and collaborates with members and other offices, to build a common understanding of school strengths and needs and to ensure resources and supports are meeting school needs.
  • Provides team leadership and guidance that promotes data driven decision making, collaborative planning, innovative thinking, and exemplary services.
  • Collaborates to design and lead professional learning opportunities for principals and school leadership teams to foster change in adult practice and accelerate student learning and performance.
  • Supports administrators/students/parents in the understanding and/or implementation of the student/parent handbook, i.e. codes, discipline matrix and appeal(s) process.
  • Facilitate formal discipline hearings for students who are expelled.
  • Collaborates with the Alternative Learning Centers to maintain educational stability for students who are expelled and develop systems and processes for positive transition for students transitioning to and from their zone school into Alternative placements.
  • Collaborates with internal and external teams to analyze data, develop system policies and procedures that promote fair and effective discipline practices
  • Leads school administrators in problem solving by providing proactive and restorative discipline practices. To assist schools in implementing Restorative strategies (building relationships and community, teaching pro-social skills, and repairing harm) aimed at keeping students engaged in the educational process
  • Supports student, parents and advocates to ensure a clear understanding of student’s rights regarding discipline policies and practices and act as a point of contact for parent concerns that come to the Student Services Department.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Chief Support Officer and/or Director of Schools (ex. prepare a variety of reports and correspondences; disseminate best practices to schools and communities; and propose ways to address performance challenges).
  • Serves as the representative of the Chief of Student Services as requested and performs other duties as assigned.
