About The Position

This role involves both direct service and supervision (70%) and administrative responsibilities (30%). The direct service aspect includes examining and assessing clients, determining treatment responses, assuring medical necessity, assessing emergent needs, providing ongoing psychiatric management (medication, psychotherapy, crisis intervention), supporting compliance with forensic/civil commitment, educating clients, and referring for services. The supervision aspect includes overseeing psychiatrists and nurse practitioners, providing consultation on client treatment, overseeing peer reviews, promoting clinical standards, providing case consultations, and continuously improving patient care. Administrative duties involve collaborating with various departments (Clinical Leadership, Nursing, IT, Finance, and QI) to ensure compliance, informing incident review processes, supporting quality improvement, participating in audits/reviews/accreditation, attending management meetings, ensuring timeliness and service volume, promoting safety and quality, and assisting with new organizational initiatives. Additionally, the role requires modeling and reinforcing Community Connections' mission and values, protecting client privacy (HIPAA), completing training, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • MD/DO degree from an accredited program required.
  • Board certification in Psychiatry required.
  • Actively licensed to practice in the District of Columbia or ability to obtain.
  • Licensure must be in good standing with DC Medicaid Board and be free from sanctions.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of clinical experience in behavioral health.
  • At least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Active DEA licensure.
  • Must possess an active CDS license in District of Columbia.
  • Strong clinical judgment and leadership presence.
  • Deep understanding of public behavioral health systems.
  • Experience with integrated care and whole-person models.
  • Ability to balance clinical quality with financial sustainability.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Must display strong interpersonal, planning, forecasting, analytical skills, and maturity required to work in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent change.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel required.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years post- Board Certification experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Medicaid populations and community-based behavioral care models preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit or community mental health setting.
  • Familiarity with DC DBH, DHCF, or similar systems.
  • Experience with value-based payment models.
  • Academic or teaching affiliation (optional).

Responsibilities

  • Examines and assesses clients to determine general physical and behavioral health conditions.
  • Determines nature and extent of present disorders and formulates appropriate treatment response to support the integration of medical and behavioral health care.
  • Assures that services provided to clients are medically necessary.
  • Assesses clients with emergent and urgent care needs and makes determinations about safety in the community.
  • Provides ongoing psychiatric management, including psychiatric medication management, psychotherapeutic support, and crisis intervention, both in the office and in the community.
  • Supports compliance with forensic and civil commitment assessments, reviews, and documentation.
  • Educates clients about their illness and provides health management information and techniques.
  • Refers clients internally and externally for services as needed.
  • Responsible for the supervision of psychiatrists and nurse practitioners and management of client care.
  • Provides consultation on client treatment with physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, clinical supervisors, frontline staff, and administrative support staff to coordinate care.
  • Oversees peer reviews according to established standards for treating psychiatrists and nurse practitioners.
  • Promotes and maintains clinical standards, protocols, and evidence-based practices.
  • Provides case consultations for complex/high-risk individuals.
  • Incorporates new information and approaches, when appropriate, to continuously improve patient care and practice.
  • Completes documentation and billing for all services in a timely manner and no more than 2 business days of delivered service.
  • Completes administrative tasks as needed including timely response (24 hours or less) to communications with external agencies and other treatment providers, etc.
  • Ensures that relevant laws and regulations are properly addressed in psychiatric practice.
  • Works collaboratively with Clinical Leadership, Nursing, IT, Finance, and QI to ensure compliance with local and federal expectations of agency-based practice of treating psychiatrists and APRNs.
  • Informs incident review processes and clinical risk mitigation strategies.
  • Supports clinical quality improvement initiatives and performance metrics.
  • Participates in audits, utilization reviews, and accreditation processes (e.g., CARF).
  • Participates in regularly scheduled administrative/management meetings.
  • Ensures timeliness and service volume standards as established by leadership, based on daily hours worked and caseload size.
  • Promotes a culture of safety and quality among the staff and clinical settings.
  • Advises and assists with new organizational initiatives including electronic medical records, health care integration, new evidence-based practices.
  • Models and reinforces Community Connections mission to provide behavioral health, residential services, and primary health care coordination for marginalized and disenfranchised women, men, youth, and children living in the District of Columbia, many of whom are coping with challenges including mental illness, addiction, and the aftermath of trauma and abuse.
