About The Position

ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. JOB PURPOSE: The Dining Manager oversees front-line staff and daily operations of three Pomona College Dining Halls (Frary, Frank, and Oldenborg) Coop Fountain and Sagehen Cafe. In collaboration with the Executive Chef and Sous Chef/Managers, this position ensures that the Dining venues are properly cleaned, stocked and staffed during each meal period. The Dining Manager is responsible for the direction and executive oversight of dining employees, , and all of the activities and services provided by them in Dining Services.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Bachelor’s degree in business management, food services or hospitality is preferred.
  • Must take and successfully pass California ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification within 30 days of hire and successfully recertify every 5 years. A valid driver’s license is essential to drive College-owned vehicles.
  • A minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience with increasing responsibility in food services, restaurant and hospitality is required.
  • Deploy professional skills in food services and hospitality management, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests. Know how to do budget development for a large, multi-unit institution. Can maintain a friendly, professional and helpful demeanor around staff and customers and act as a staff role model for how to deliver superior customer service and food services to the Pomona College community and the general public. Provide professional leadership and supervision for dining staff to promote a positive work environment and teamwork within a diverse group. Must recruit and train dining staff.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, customer service and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of employees.
  • Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Shiftboard, Blackboard POS, menu-driven databases). Demonstrate understanding of the use of technology/devices/equipment in assessing and improving dining room systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the College’s strategic vision and the division’s/department’s annual goals.
  • Use exceptional organizational, time management problem solving, and basic math skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
  • Operate the College’s vehicles safely for campus-related work and meet all insurance-related requirements.
  • Must place requisitions for supplies and equipment in a timely manner.
  • Must safely lift and move supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must report to work on time and in appropriate business attire at the start of each shift.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the General Manager, Executive Chef , Senior Dining Manager and Chef/Managers to oversee the daily operations of the Pomona College dining venues, to ensure that the Dining venues are properly cleaned, stocked and staffed during each meal period, and to ensure compliance with safe food handling practices and the highest level of food quality and customer service is provided for the Pomona College community.
  • Oversee the collection of cash and charge receipts by cashiers: Follow all College and Business Office procedures for counting cash drawers in and out and securing funds prior to opening, during meal periods and after closing. Oversee safe and secure handling of daily revenue and twice weekly transport to and from the Business Office as required.
  • Provide clear direction and oversight of all dining room activities in order to develop and achieve annual goals, including budgeting, planning and staff development. Responsible for monitoring and evaluating direct reports, and overall staff performance and daily assignments. Maintain an efficient, collegial, and proactive work environment within the dining room and collaborating departments. Supervise, evaluate and implement training for direct reports to ensure that they follow work rules and procedures at all times. This includes the delivery of hands-on or group training and orientation sessions to staff and personnel issues/processes, such as scheduling, work-related accidents/injuries, counseling, hiring/terminating, disciplinary actions, coaching and assigning duties. Implement and maintain a system to schedule staff to maintain dining hall service and production schedule while staying within budget. This includes managing staffing levels throughout each shift at all three dining halls.
  • Must be California ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certified, and successfully recertify every 5 years. Ensure compliance with all College policies and procedures and with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations, and public health standards. Conduct and/or assist the Operations Manager with periodic and regular inspections of assigned units to monitor the quality of: i. safety, cleanliness, sanitation, and maintenance of equipment and service areas; ii. employee appearance and cleanliness.
  • Organize and oversee the breakdown and cleanup following each meal period in the Dining venues.
  • Create work orders for required maintenance and repairs of Dining Halls and service areas.
  • Monitor inventory supply levels as needed to ensure that the Dining Halls are adequately stocked.
  • Provide excellent and professional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and external customers. Resolve problems and follow up with customers directly to ensure full customer satisfaction, without unnecessarily referring customers to other staff members.
  • Coordinates temporary staffing need within the dining halls including but not limited to employment agencies and social service employment staffing firms.
  • Write various reports as needed.
  • Assist dining staff during peak periods in dining production tasks and other cleaning assignments as needed.
  • Coordinate special projects/tasks/duties and provide assistance as assigned.
