With more than 11,000 employees, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. For nearly 85 years, they have designed, built and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. As the largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, they are simultaneously building four classes of ships and have pioneered the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet for decades. The role involves laying out, fabricating, and assembling a variety of standard and nonstandard major jigs, fixtures, tool masters, master tooling gauges, and related tooling involving compound angles and complex contours where the establishment and coordination to exacting tolerances of numerous tooling holes and reference points between several planes are required. The technician performs measurement surveys using photogrammetry, total stations, laser trackers or other electronic 3-D instruments. They use computer aided designs (CAD) graphic user interface software for design. They plan work to be performed and determine methods and sequence of operations working from tool design drawings or own designs. They set up and operate optical instruments to check overall and detailed alignment, fit, or adjustment of assemblies. They develop and design holding devices and jig and fixture details. They prepare operational sequences and shop drawings covering parts fabrication and assembly to be performed by others. They may monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
