Have the specific skillset and experience for the following role: The Digital Engineering Specialist reports to the Digital Engineering Manager for functional leadership and to the Systems Engineering Manager for project delivery. This role is primarily responsible for the implementation, configuration, administration, and optimization of digital engineering tools and systems that support Terrestrial Energy's IMSR reactor development program. This role serves as the technical owner of the engineering tool stack, including Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), requirements management, and engineering analysis software. The successful candidate will lead software verification and validation activities, ensure compliance with nuclear quality assurance standards, manage data quality and system integrations, and support the advancement of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and digital engineering capabilities across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Systems, Nuclear, Electrical, Chemical, or related engineering discipline) preferred. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent technical field will be considered.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in digital engineering, PLM/ALM implementation, engineering IT, or related technical roles.
  • Demonstrated experience with PLM system implementation, configuration, and administration (Windchill experience highly preferred).
  • Proven experience conducting software verification and validation activities for engineering analysis tools or COTS software.
  • Expert knowledge of PLM systems, particularly PTC Windchill (configuration, customization, workflows, administration).
  • Strong understanding of software quality assurance principles and nuclear software QA standards (ASME NQA-1, CSA N286.7, IEEE standards).
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., Codebeamer, DOORS, Jama, Polarion, Innoslate) and ALM platforms.
  • Familiarity with engineering analysis software including CAD systems, FEA/CFD tools, reactor physics codes, thermal-hydraulic codes, and process simulation tools (e.g., ASPEN).
  • Knowledge of data management, database concepts, and system integration approaches (APIs, data exchange formats, middleware).
  • Understanding of configuration management, version control, and change control processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and technical documentation tools.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for complex technical systems.
  • Excellent technical communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with engineering, IT, quality assurance, and external vendors.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the nuclear industry (CANDU, SMR, advanced reactors, or other nuclear technologies).
  • PTC Windchill certification or other PLM platform certifications.
  • Python programming experience for automation, scripting, and system integration.
  • Experience with SQL, JavaScript, APIs, and scripting languages for data manipulation and system integration.
  • Experience managing servers (Windows/Linux) for engineering applications and tools.
  • Familiarity with Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio Code, PyCharm, or Jupyter.

  • Familiarity with digital twin concepts and implementation.
  • Knowledge of Canadian (CNSC) and/or US (NRC, DOE) nuclear regulatory frameworks and software qualification requirements.
  • Experience implementing or auditing against nuclear quality standards (CSA N286 series, ASME NQA-1, 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix B).
  • Experience with cloud-based engineering platforms and SaaS applications.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles and secure engineering practices.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE) designation or eligibility.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • ITIL or similar IT service management certification.
  • Passion for digital transformation and clean energy technologies.

Responsibilities

  • PLM/ALM Configuration & Administration Lead the configuration, customization, and administration of the PLM system to support engineering design, document management, and configuration control processes.
  • Develop and implement workflows, lifecycles, object attributes, and business rules within the PLM system to align with nuclear engineering processes and quality requirements.
  • Manage user administration, roles, permissions, and access controls to ensure appropriate security and data governance.
  • Configure and maintain Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tools to support requirements management, testing, and traceability activities.
  • Troubleshoot system issues, coordinate with IT and vendors, and implement system updates and patches.
  • Software Verification & Validation Develop and maintain Software Quality Assurance (SQA) procedures for engineering software in compliance with nuclear quality standards (ASME NQA-1, CSA N286.7, 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix B).
  • Perform software qualification activities for safety-related and quality-affecting engineering analysis codes including reactor physics codes, thermal-hydraulic codes, structural analysis tools, and process simulation software (e.g., ASPEN).
  • Conduct verification and validation of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) engineering software and calculation tools including Excel, Jupyter notebooks, CAD systems, and specialized engineering applications.
  • Develop verification test cases, validation benchmarks, and acceptance criteria for engineering software.
  • Maintain software V&V documentation including validation reports, test records, and software qualification packages to support regulatory submissions and audits.
  • Establish and manage software configuration management practices including version control, baseline management, and change control for engineering analysis tools.
  • Digital Engineering Tools & Integration Participate in evaluation, selection, and procurement of digital engineering tools including requirements management systems, modeling tools, and engineering analysis software.
  • Design and implement integrations between engineering systems (PLM, requirements tools, document management, CAD, analysis tools, IDEs) to enable seamless data exchange and workflow automation.
  • Develop data exchange processes, interfaces, and APIs to connect engineering tools and ensure data consistency across the digital engineering ecosystem.
  • Support implementation and configuration of requirements management tools (e.g., Codebeamer, DOORS, Jama, Polarion, Innoslate) to enable traceability and requirements-driven design.
  • Coordinate with IT/Information Services on infrastructure, security, licensing, and technical support for engineering applications while maintaining ownership of engineering tool functionality and requirements.
  • Data Management & Quality Lead data cleanup initiatives to ensure engineering data quality, consistency, and compliance with configuration management standards.
  • Develop and enforce data governance policies, naming conventions, metadata standards, and data quality metrics for engineering information.
  • Establish data validation rules, data quality checks, and automated data quality monitoring within PLM and other engineering systems.
  • Support data migration activities from legacy systems to modern digital engineering platforms, ensuring data integrity and traceability throughout migration processes.
  • Conduct data audits and develop corrective action plans to address data quality issues and non-conformances.
  • MBSE & Digital Engineering Advancement Support implementation and adoption of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices and tools (e.g., SysML, Cameo Systems Modeler).
  • Collaborate with systems engineers to establish MBSE frameworks, modeling standards, and integration between system models and other engineering artifacts.
  • Contribute to digital twin and digital engineering transformation initiatives to enhance engineering efficiency and decision-making.
  • Research and evaluate emerging digital engineering technologies, tools, and methodologies to maintain competitive advantage and engineering excellence.
  • Develop business cases and technical recommendations for digital engineering tool investments and capability enhancements.
  • Training, Support & Process Development Develop training materials, user guides, and documentation for digital engineering tools and processes.
  • Conduct training sessions and provide ongoing technical support to engineering users on PLM, requirements management, and analysis software.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Process Lead to develop and improve digital engineering processes, workflows, and best practices.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure digital engineering tool effectiveness and user adoption.
  • Support engineering audits and assessments by ensuring digital tools and software V&V documentation meet regulatory and quality requirements.
