About The Position

The Briscoe Center for American History is one of the nation’s leading research centers for historical study. The center’s archives, libraries, museums, and historic buildings are part of The University of Texas at Austin’s commitment to collecting, preserving, and making available the evidence of the past. The center’s exhibit spaces, classrooms, and Reading Room are located on The University of Texas at Austin campus. The center also operates the Briscoe–Garner Museum in Uvalde, Texas; the Sam Rayburn Museum in Bonham, Texas; and Winedale, a research collection of nineteenth-century structures, material culture, and decorative arts located near Round Top, Texas. The Briscoe Center promotes the university’s teaching and research mission through classes and seminars, academic fellowships, faculty collaborations, and student internships. The center fosters public exploration of history through research services, exhibits, books, public programs, and digital humanities projects inspired by archival holdings.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in Information Science, Information Studies, History or other closely related field with a concentration in archival enterprise.
  • 1-2 years working with borndigital material in an archival setting.
  • Strong technical expertise with borndigital objects in a library or cultural heritage organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with digital stewardship issues, tools, standards, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with metadata standards relevant to archival collections and digital preservation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative work environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Archivist designation.
  • Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) certificate from the Society of American Archivists
  • Experience planning and managing a digital preservation program.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Appraise, preserve, describe, and provide access to primary source digital materials, both born digital and digital content created in-house.
  • Develop and document policies and procedures for stewardship of digital materials, including email, websites, social media, as well as electronic records residing on current or legacy media formats.
  • Participate in center-wide activities, collaborative working groups,
  • Keep abreast of current trends in digital preservation theory, standards and technologies and lead evaluation and implementation of tools, standards and systems related to digital stewardship and metadata management.
  • May recruit, train and supervise student workers.
  • Represent the Briscoe Center in collaborative campuswide digital stewardship efforts.
  • Meet and communicate with donors to facilitate collection development and acquisition and assist in transferring archival collections to the Center, with some occasional travel as needed.
  • Work in the reading room regularly and respond to reference inquiries from a wide variety of individuals and entities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
