About The Position

The Digital Archives Technician will work under the mentorship of the Museum Curator and Historical Landscape Architect at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. This internship focuses on processing, arranging, and describing park records and archival collections to support management, preservation decisions, and public access. The intern will organize digital records within an existing file plan, appraise records for archival retention, and support park-wide data management initiatives. They will also develop a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) document that establishes consistent guidelines for processing and managing future digital project files. This position provides hands-on professional experience in archival management, digital preservation, database management, and digital documentation workflows. The intern will collaborate with members of the Integrated Resources Team and gain exposure to how cultural resources are managed at the park level. Due to the park’s urban setting, the intern will also have opportunities to network with museum and preservation professionals in the surrounding community.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in or recent graduation from a relevant academic program such as Archival Studies, Library and Information Science, History, Museum Studies, Cultural Resource Management, Historic Preservation, or a related field
  • Coursework or experience in archival management, digital preservation, or historical documentation preferred
  • Familiarity with archival practices, digitization workflows, and metadata standards
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet project deadlines
  • Experience with digital imaging and scanning equipment preferred
  • Knowledge of database management systems or archival description tools a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated interest in cultural heritage preservation and ethical handling of historical materials
  • Adaptability, willingness to learn new technologies, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Responsibilities

  • Organize and appraise digital park records according to established archival file plans
  • Digitize archival materials, including scanning documents and creating accessible digital files
  • Create and apply metadata, file naming conventions, and digital organization standards
  • Assist with processing physical archival collections, including records, archives, and large-format media
  • Develop a comprehensive, searchable finding aid for digitized archival materials
  • Draft a Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) document for park-wide archival and documentation workflows
  • Enter and manage data related to compliance records, preservation projects, and historic documentation
  • Support documentation of historic preservation and maintenance projects
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary park staff and participate in meetings, workshops, and professional development opportunities
