About The Position

This is a public health nursing position that may work in an office, clinical, school, or other community setting. The Public Health Diabetes Educator serves as a subject matter expert in diabetes management and education within the Mecklenburg County Public Health-School Health Program. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive diabetes education and training to program staff, school personnel, students, and families. The nurse plays a key role in supporting safe and effective care of students with diabetes in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and ensuring best practices, individualized care plans, and evidence-based guidelines are integrated into daily practice. All Registered Nurses employed by the Mecklenburg County Health Department are Public Health Nurses. Public Health Nurses, regardless of official title or classification, may provide nursing services during urgent and/or emergent public health events. These services include, but are not limited to, administration of immunizations for various ages and groups, mass medication distribution, and provision of health services in shelter environments.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years professional nursing experience, including experience in pediatric, school health, or diabetes education.
  • Two years of experience in diabetes care, education management, chronic disease or related patient care required.
  • Degree from an accredited/approved nursing education program.
  • Non-BSN incumbents are required to complete state Public Health nursing coursework and exams within a year of hire.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in NC issued by the NC Board of Nursing or another Nurse Licensure Compact State.
  • Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) or (CDCES) Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, or Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM).
  • Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) by the American Heart Association that is valid for at least 90 days after hire. Maintenance of this certification is required as part of employment.
  • May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina driver's license.
  • Requires County Driving Privileges.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver diabetes education and training sessions for school health staff, school personnel, students, and families.
  • Serve as the lead instructor for the school health program’s diabetes orientation class for new nursing staff.
  • Conduct ongoing professional development offerings to support staff competence in diabetes care.
  • Create and maintain a positive, mutually beneficial learning environment that fosters independence and promotes critical thinking development.
  • Assess knowledge and skill gaps to inform educational interventions.
  • Create and update educational materials, clinical guidelines, and diabetes care plans tailored to the school setting.
  • Collaborate with medical providers, families, and school teams to ensure care plans are appropriate, comprehensive, and culturally sensitive.
  • Develop and revise policies and procedures related to diabetes care in alignment with current standards and regulations.
  • Develop curricula that is reflective of evidence-based practice and uses the appropriate methods of teaching to accommodate learning styles and the learning environment.
  • Serve as a resource and consultant to school nurses, school staff, and administrators on diabetes-related issues.
  • Provide guidance on the management of students with complex diabetes care needs.
  • Assist with the evaluation and improvement of school health practices related to chronic disease management.
  • Monitor and analyze trends related to diabetes care in schools and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Contribute to program evaluations and reports as needed.
