About The Position

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking Engineering, Professional, Technical, and administrative support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant located in Amarillo, Texas. Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance Y-12's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff employed directly by the security complex. The technician will be assigned full time (40 hours weekly) to support Development Metallurgical Engineering & Processing group and should be capable of performing hands-on activities in the following areas: Routine hands-on work includes preparation of samples for metallographic examination. Activities include sawing, mounting, grinding, polishing, and chemical etching of samples for evaluation using various tools such as optical microscopes and other analytical instruments. Additional general foundry activities may include melting and casting, sawing, shearing, drilling, coating of crucibles and molds, cleaning of materials (solvent, acid, and caustic), pressing and swaging, and heat treating of depleted uranium and depleted uranium alloys to support general research and development activities. Other work type activities include taking inventory of materials (i.e. uranium, chemicals, equipment, etc.), handling/packaging of wastes(radiological/non-radiological), handling gas cylinders, and housekeeping and/or cleaning of work areas. Cleaning the inside of the furnaces, replacing thermocouples, replacing sensors and gauges, and furnace leak checking are other routine tasks.

Requirements

  • Associates or higher degree in a technical field and 6 to 10 years of related experience or high school diploma and 13-19 years of relevant experience.
  • Requires advanced knowledge and understanding in area of expertise and associated equipment, processes, or systems.
  • Q Clearance.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy and would be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen - external applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post- offer, pre-employment drug test.
  • Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position.
