About The Position

The Department of Public Safety's mission is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people of North Carolina through preparation, prevention, and protection with integrity and honor. The agency houses many public safety divisions, including Emergency Management, Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Samarcand Training Academy, and the North Carolina National Guard. This position is a 12-month role within the Perquimans Juvenile Detention Center, focusing on teaching core academic courses to small groups of students in grades 6-12. The work unit operates under the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Division of Juvenile Justice, and is dedicated to educating and rehabilitating youth within a secure residential facility. The role involves delivering structured educational services to juveniles, many of whom have learning or developmental disabilities, with the goal of reducing and preventing juvenile delinquency. The team works collaboratively across disciplines to provide individualized educational and behavioral support, helping youth progress academically while addressing their social and developmental needs.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid North Carolina teacher license, "A" or "M", with teaching certification in the area of EC, English, Math, Social Studies or Science (middle school) or EC, English, Math, Social Studies or Science (high school)
  • OR be eligible for a NC Teacher License through an alternative licensing pathway offered by NCDPI
  • Candidate must also have a four year college degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution
  • All work history and education (including accurate dates of employment/attendance) must be documented on the application
  • Supplemental Questions are a required part of the application; answers must reference education or work experience listed on the application
  • Degrees and transcripts must be received from appropriately accredited college or university
  • Applicants who earned college credit hours but did not complete a degree program, must attach an unofficial transcript to receive credit for education
  • International degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting
  • Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty that includes Character of Discharge - Member 4 or Service 2 form) to the application
  • Applicants seeking National Guard Preference: A current member of the North Carolina National Guard in good standing must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS). A former member of the North Carolina National Guard who served for at least 6 years and were discharged under honorable conditions, must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22
  • If applying for a Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention position certified through the NC Dept. of Justice - Criminal Justice Standards Division, applicants are required to electronically submit fingerprints to the NC State Bureau of Investigation for a state and national criminal history record check and enrollment in the FBI’s Next Generation Identification System: Criminal Justice Record of Arrest and Prosecution Background Service (“RAP Back”)

Responsibilities

  • Planning lessons based on the NC Standards and student’s individual learning needs
  • Ensuring success with all students while providing appropriate and engaging activities to teach concepts
  • Providing research-based strategies and interventions to provide an appropriate education for all students in a small group setting
  • Utilizing data to inform all instructional activities based on NC Standards
  • Implementing IEPs
  • Keeping all student records, exceptional children's program and other paperwork, and student progress up to date
  • Serving as a member of the interdisciplinary team in order to plan for student services and treatment
