About The Position

The Non-Secure Detention Teacher is responsible for providing success-oriented, short-term educational instruction that enables students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of practical teaching experience.
  • Middle school & high school teaching experience required.
  • Certified by the NYS State Department of Education or have the ability to transfer certification to NYS in a timely manner.
  • NYS Teaching Certification in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Health, Biology, Chemistry, students with disabilities (English, Social studies, Mathematics or Biology or Generalist).
  • TCI and First Aid/CPR Certified required or have the ability to attain within agency timeframe
  • Must have a current, valid driver’s license per Agency guidelines.
  • Ability to work with an economically and culturally diverse population.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with at risk youth in detention/residential facility preferred
  • Fluent in English and Spanish with excellent verbal and written communication skills, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develops and facilitates lesson plan instructions to students, including 1 on 1 and small groups.
  • Provides input and helps facilitate social and emotional learning components of lesson plans.
  • Supervise classes to ensure all students are learning in a safe and productive environment.
  • Organize supplies and resources for lectures and presentations.
  • Deliver personalized instruction to each student by encouraging interactive learning.
  • If absent they shall develop subplans to be utilized in their absence with clear concise instruction for implementation by Non-Secure Detention staff.
  • Plan and implement educational activities and events by collaborating with the youth home school district of record or last attended.
  • Present lessons in a comprehensive manner and use visual/audio means to facilitate learning
  • Provides individualized instruction to each student by promoting interactive learning
  • Creates and distributes educational content based on youth’s current grade level or level of understanding.
  • Ensures the classroom remains clean, organized, and tidy at all times.
  • Observe, implement, monitor and complete specific reports regarding student performance and behaviors in the classroom.
  • Provide pre-crisis intervention and conflict resolution with students, including implementing and using Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) principles, approved behavior modification techniques/strategies and physical restraints.
  • Recommends appropriate reward and consequence outcomes for the student’s behaviors, including adherence to school rules and procedures (Code of Conduct).
  • Monitors and/or develop curriculum based on individualized student needs if not available form youth home district of record or last attended.
  • Modifies using plans based on needs of the classroom to coincide with a safe structured warning environment.
  • Complies will all federal, state and local laws and regulations, including those or ORR, ICE and the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
  • Adheres to agency policies and procedures; follows and supports agency mission, vision and values including participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.
