About The Position

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office mission is to protect and serve the community in a manner that preserves the public trust. The department has an immediate opening for Detention Deputy who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include managing inmate behavior through direct supervision and to provide a secure, safe and humane confinement. This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site position.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent education
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to credibly testify in a court of law
  • Must undergo, and pass, a thorough physical and psychological examination and successfully complete a background investigation
  • No tattoos, scars, or brands that qualify as “Unauthorized Tattoos” under the Sheriff’s Office Policy 1044.3 are allowed under any circumstances by any member of the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office. Tattoos on the head, face, neck, or hands are prohibited.

Nice To Haves

  • Secondary education in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, behavioral/social science or related field.
  • Evidence-Based Practice Corrections Professional Certification from an accredited school
  • Experience using de-escalation techniques in a work setting.
  • Previous work-related experience.
  • Knowledge of CPR principles, procedures and techniques
  • Possess an Advanced First Aid certification
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Applicants are NOT required to be certified by the Minnesota Peace Officer’s Standard Board.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and supervise jail inmates and related activities.
  • Maintain security and safety of facilities, inmates and employees by means of surveillance.
  • Monitor cameras, alarms, doors and security controls.
  • Interact with inmates by enforcing rules and facility regulations.
  • Conduct inmate counts and searches.
  • Prevent the introduction of contraband and weapons into facilities.
  • Respond to and assess emergencies such as disturbances among inmates, fires, escape attempts, contraband recovery, medical situations and restores order and security.
  • Mediate conflicts among inmates and housing units.
  • Diffuse emotional inmates and deescalate tension in housing units.
  • Handle intake and release of inmates.
  • Obtain pertinent information, necessary documentation and proper credentials from arresting or escorting officer prior to receiving or releasing inmates.
  • Supervise recreational and visiting periods.
  • Identify and monitor at risk inmates with mental illness, alcoholism or drug addiction.
  • Provide supervision of inmates during court appearances.
  • Prepare written reports and logs activities.
