About The Position

Do you love helping kids and families and connecting them with the resources they need? The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library is currently seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Desk Clerk who has a passion for public service to work at the Library's youth services desk. As a Desk Clerk, you will assist customers with locating materials, answering questions, assisting with library programs, and SO MUCH MORE. The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library is looking for candidates that will work independently with minimal direction, follow procedures, prioritize and multi-task, be a reliable team player with a strong commitment to customer service, and work in a fast-paced environment. This is a part-time, non exempt position, averaging 19 hours per week. The 2026 starting wage is $16.40 per hour and includes paid floating holiday. The proposed schedule includes a variety of daytime and evening hours, including rotating Saturdays.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in general computing, hardware, software and Microsoft Office is required.
  • Ability to work enthusiastically and effectively with children, teenagers, and adults in both library and community settings.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including poise in stressful situations and the ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability and initiative to work independently and efficiently with minimal direction; strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to follow Library policies and procedures.
  • Positive attitude, flexibility, and enjoyment of challenging work in a dynamic environment with shifting tasks and priorities.
  • Proficiency in word processing software and operating office and library equipment (e.g., computer, printer, photocopier).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license, good driving record and the ability to maintain a good driving record to ensure safe operation of library vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Provides a welcoming, helpful presence for library customers by assisting with library services, locating materials, understanding library policies and procedures, and booking study rooms.
  • Answers reference and information questions related to children's and teen materials and services.
  • Communicates effectively, professionally, and honestly with library staff and visitors.
  • Contributes to an orderly, and visually appealing library by shelving materials, stocking supplies, maintaining displays and tidying of youth spaces.
  • Assist with physical displays, passive programs, bulletin boards, and other assigned projects.
  • Assist at library programs as directed.
  • Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly public space within the library building and grounds.
  • Contributes to a positive, team-oriented work environment by being helpful, respectful, and approachable to both staff and the public.
  • Runs errands.
