Our people enjoy solving interesting technical challenges in a culture where everyone trusts each other to do the right thing. For you, working with us can mean deeper job satisfaction, better rewards, and a great quality of life inside and outside of work. Job Title: Design Manufacturing Engineer Reporting To: Management, General Engineering Work Schedule: Onsite – Buffalo, NY Our Space Sector is looking for a hands-on Design Manufacturing Engineer to join the Actuation and Avionics ForgeWorks Team. This role will support the A&A Engineering Lab and the ForgeWorks rapid-response cell. Primary focus is rapid diagnosis, containment, prototyping, and validation of mechanical and electromechanical assembly issues on the production floor and in the lab. The role bridges short-term field fixes with durable engineering solutions, participates in lab testing and fixture/tool design, and supports small build activities. ForgeWorks is an embedded, on-floor rapid-response engineering cell and a subset of the FastWorks group. Its mission is to minimize downtime by quickly diagnosing and containing assembly and tooling issues, deploying temporary field-tested fixes to keep production running, then partnering with product and manufacturing engineering to formalize durable solutions. ForgeWorks owns JIRA intake and ticket updates, uses on-floor engagement (Gemba/walkups) to prioritize work, and provides clear traceability from problem report through validation and handoff. As a Design Manufacturing Engineer, you will: Triage on-floor issues and walk-ups: diagnose root cause with technicians and implement temporary containment to keep production running. Foster strong communication and teamwork with engineering technicians to ensure smooth knowledge transfer, effective problem-solving, and aligned execution on containment and long-term solutions. Design, fabricate, and test rapid prototypes, jigs, fixtures, and tooling (including 3D printing and machine-room equipment). Perform or learn to perform hands-on mechanical tasks such as helicoil installation, bearing swaging, press fits, basic machining, riveting, fastening, and fixture assembly. Execute lab test setups and data collection with the Lab Manager: cabling, fixturing, hydraulics, power, instrumentation, and basic DAQ use. Create clear OP sheet notes, own and update JIRA tickets from intake through handoff, and document temporary fixes and formalized solutions. Formalize validated fixes into repeatable builds or prepare full handoff packages (prints, BOM, cost/benefit, test data) for product/manufacturing engineering. Maintain lab and on-floor tool cleanliness and organization; assist with inventory and basic provisioning. Collaborate with supply chain, A&T, and product teams to evaluate manufacturability, cost, and long-term stability of solutions. Support ad-hoc small box builds or short-run assemblies as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing or engineering lab environments with mechanical assembly and tooling work.
  • Ability to access U.S. export-controlled information
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mechanical repairs/modifications: helicoil/tap work, bearing swaging/pressing, basic machining, and fixture assembly.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools and safe use of shop equipment (presses, drill presses, vertical mills, crimpers, torque tools).
  • Comfortable in both shop/floor and lab environments; able to lift and maneuver fixtures and assemblies.
  • Strong troubleshooting aptitude and ability to rapidly diagnose assembly/process issues with technicians.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for documentation and handoffs.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize competing requests in a fast-paced setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with electromechanical assemblies, hydraulics, or actuator testing.
  • Familiarity with basic test instrumentation (multimeter, oscilloscope) or DAQ fundamentals.
  • Basic CAD skills for quick fixture/tool drawings (e.g., NX).
  • Experience with JIRA or similar ticketing systems and OP sheet documentation.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping tools (3D printing) and machining practices.
  • Knowledge of lathe and mill operation (manual or CNC) is preferred.
