About The Position

The Design Engineer III is an experienced technical contributor responsible for independently executing complex C&I renewable energy designs, including solar, BESS, hybrid/off‑grid systems, and LV/MV power distribution. This role serves as a project‑level technical lead, coordinating closely with project management, estimating, BIM/CAD, procurement, construction, and field teams. The Design Engineer III performs advanced calculations, guides junior engineers, reviews deliverables for quality and constructability, and ensures designs meet contractual scope, code compliance, budget, and schedule requirements. Essential Functions Lead and complete the development of construction‑ready design packages for C&I renewable systems, including: LV and MV power distribution Solar PV systems and DC/AC integration Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Emergency/standby generator and UPS systems Grounding systems (equipment, safety, isolated) Produce and validate engineering calculations: Voltage drop, fault current, conductor sizing Load flow and series ratings Protection/coordination notes Develop and update Single‑Line Diagrams, panel schedules, equipment layouts, and cable/conduit schedules. Review and interpret commercial and technical project documents (PPA, interconnection requirements, service contracts, facilities studies) to identify and incorporate key design requirements. Serve as the technical lead on assigned projects, coordinating with PM, estimating, operations, procurement, and field personnel. Support development and maintenance of design schedules, deliverable lists, and risk mitigation plans. Interface with Utilities on interconnection, metering, and protection topics; escalate complex items to Engineering IV/Lead. Coordinate with AHJs for plan check submittals and resolve corrections in a timely manner. Manage and review 3rd‑party engineering partners when required. Respond to RFIs, clarify design intent, and support field electricians during installation. Conduct site audits to gather existing condition data, validate system integration points, and confirm constructability. Review submittals, shop drawings, and vendor documents for technical accuracy and compliance with design intent. Perform detailed QA/QC reviews of internal and external design documents to ensure alignment with CSI standards, codes, and customer requirements. Provide day‑to‑day guidance, technical coaching, and redline support to Engineers I–II and BIM/CAD staff. Participate in lessons learned, contribute to development of templates, SOPs, calculation tools, and support continuous improvement initiatives. Stay current with industry codes, standards, and renewable energy technologies. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred.
  • 5–8+ years electrical/renewable design experience (C&I preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC, CEC, IEEE, and local codes.
  • Experience reviewing and producing full engineering design packages.
  • Ability to lead project‑level technical efforts and mentor junior staff.
  • Effective communication skills with a team‑oriented approach.
  • Posses a moderate level of understanding of discipline specific technical designs, engineering principles, business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
  • Skilled at evaluating design alternatives, troubleshooting technical issues, and identifying cost‑effective solutions.
  • Ability to apply engineering theories and principles to review and evaluate design drawings to determine if the design meets the contractual requirements, construction best practices and budget.
  • Ability to read Photometric Calcs. Knowledge of IES and city foot candle requirements.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite of products, BlueBeam, and other web-based software applications.
  • Proficiency with engineering design and analysis tools such as AutoCAD, PVSyst, Helioscope, ETAP, or similar
  • Strong analytical, organizational, time management and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Able to bridge technical discussions between engineering, construction, and customer stakeholders.
  • Frequently works outdoors on uneven surfaces.
  • May be required to sit or stand for long periods.
  • May be required to stoop, bend, and crouch.
  • Works in a climate-controlled environment 50% of the time.
  • May work in varying weather conditions: hot, cold, and wet conditions.
  • Frequently works in areas with large industrial equipment subject to high noise levels.
  • May occasionally work in areas with hazardous chemicals.

  • Experience with OSHPD and DSA Approvals preferred
  • Title‑24 experience preferred; OSHPD/DSA exposure a plus.
