About The Position

The Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Lead Teacher will provide high-quality literacy instructional supports that connect research to practice. The LETRS Lead Teacher will support literacy efforts of CCPS in alignment with the Ready to Read Act passed in 2019 by the Maryland General Assembly. The Ready to Read Act is a screening and early intervention bill aimed to prevent reading failure in schools throughout the State.

Requirements

  • Mastery of Early Childhood or Elementary LETRS course.
  • Certified teacher with a minimum of three successful years of literacy experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated management, leadership and human relations skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions.
  • Proven ability to carry an assignment to its completion.
  • Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to the duties and responsibilities listed below.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Support data-based decisions for students identified to receive Comprehensive Coordinated Early Intervening Services (CCEIS).
  • Assist classroom teachers in identification of supplemental instructional support for at-risk students.
  • Explore, implement, refine, and model the science of reading research-based best practices in the classroom in alignment with LETRS and the Maryland Ready to Read Act.
  • Dedicate time to enhance learning with peers and LETRS facilitators through data discussions and collaboration.
  • Connect CCPS resources and curriculum to align with the tenets of LETRS.
  • Support identified striving readers by providing instructional staff appropriate research-based best practices and scaffolds as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with LETRS peers and facilitators to identify trends and support needs.
  • Attend meetings held by LETRS facilitators and /or Coordinator of Instructional Data.
  • Play an integral role in providing school-based support for teaching and learning related to the science of reading.
  • Use deep foundational knowledge to share developmentally appropriate benchmarks and milestones of learning to support the planning of targeted instruction.
  • Provide informal assessment training sessions for teachers during PLCs so they can administer to determine gaps in learning and identify foundational skills that require intervention.
  • Serve as an on-site resource and support for colleagues in their school building using assessment reports to target areas of literacy need to apply the tenets of LETRS during Core Instruction and Tier 2 Interventions as part of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
  • Availability before or after contractual hours up to one hour per month as determined by the Elementary ELA Supervisor.
