About The Position

The Derrick Hand is responsible for safely handling and guiding drill pipe on the racking board while supporting all phases of workover operations, including rig up, drilling, rig down, and routine equipment maintenance. This position operates winch lines, air hoists, elevators, tongs, and other rig components, performs cleaning and upkeep of rig structures, and works at various heights to ensure efficient and safe operations. The Derrick Hand follows all safety procedures, communicates effectively with crew members, and uses proper tools and techniques to maintain equipment while contributing to overall rig productivity and safe work practices in a demanding outdoor field environment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of workover rig operations, rotary equipment, and drilling processes
  • Understanding of safety procedures, fall protection, and hazard awareness in elevated work environments
  • Skill in handling drill pipe on the racking board and working at significant heights
  • Ability to operate winch lines, air hoists, and related rig equipment safely
  • Skill in rigging up, drilling, rigging down, and performing routine rig maintenance
  • Ability to latch/unlatch elevators and operate tongs for extended periods
  • Proficiency in using basic hand tools
  • Strong physical ability for lifting, climbing, bending, and prolonged standing
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to listen, follow instructions, and work well with diverse crew members
  • Strong time-management and task-organization skills
  • Technical aptitude for understanding equipment and mechanical processes
  • High integrity, accountability, and self-motivation in daily tasks
  • Ability to maintain safe work practices and report hazards
  • Capability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to meet driving requirements and operate vehicles safely as needed
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • 6+ months of experience in oilfield operations preferred.
  • Must meet Driver Acceptability Profile requirements (driving position).
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience is also acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Handle the drill pipe in and out of the racking board (about 90 feet above the rig floor) for extended periods of time.
  • Be able to safely operate the winch line and air hoist.
  • Be able to perform all duties needed to rig up, drill, rig down, and maintain rotary equipment.
  • Be capable of performing the following:
  • Latch and unlatch elevators.
  • Work tongs for extended periods of time.
  • Scrub and paint the rig.
  • Perform maintenance on the rig as instructed.
  • Work at different heights above ground level on rig equipment.
  • Be able to use hand tools.
