The Arizona Department of Corrections Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) is seeking a driven leader to join our team as Deputy Warden of Operations. Under the direction of the Warden, the Deputy Warden of Operations monitors and oversees complex operations and serves as the acting Warden in his / her absence. The incumbent will serve as administrator of a multi-custody prison complex, which includes restrictive status housing. The ideal candidate will have experience in leading and developing diverse groups of staff, progressive administrative experience in budget management, managing inmate populations, monitoring and directing unit operations, security, inmate programming, and physical plant operations. In collaboration with the Warden, the Deputy Warden of Operations is responsible for ensuring the prison applies modern correctional practices.

  • Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation, drug test, and a medical/physical examination.
  • All employees are required to take a Tuberculosis (TB) test during their New Employee Orientation and every year thereafter.
  • Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked or suspended.
  • Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training.
  • An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a Deputy Warden (Correctional Administrator II or III)
  • Administrative or Business management experience within ADCRR and a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice/Corrections, Public Administration, Business Administration or Sociology/Social Science

Responsibilities

  • Directs and provides leadership and supervision of unit activities and subordinate staff
  • Develops, controls and reviews unit budget and expenditure reports
  • Oversees the development and operation of work, education and recreational programs for the inmates
  • Reviews and evaluates reports of unit operations and develops replies
  • Monitors and advises on complex and high-level matters throughout the institution
  • Oversees inmate management to include grievances, appeals, classification, discipline, transfers, etc.
  • Performs security and physical plant inspections and ensures compliance with ADC policies and health, safety and sanitation standards
  • Reviews and approves unit personnel actions including training, scheduling, performance evaluations, discipline, hiring and terminations
  • Conducts staff meetings
  • Attends trainings and/or meetings as required
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment
