About The Position

The Deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (Deputy THPO) supports the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer in promoting, protecting, and managing Wilton Rancheria’s cultural and historic resources. This position assists with the administration of the Tribal Historic Preservation Program and serves as a key operational and technical resource for cultural preservation activities.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Wilton Rancheria’s Tribal history, culture, and cultural preservation priorities.
  • Strong understanding of historic preservation principles, cultural resource management, and applicable regulatory frameworks.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly to Tribal leadership, community members, and external partners.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Tribal departments, advisory committees, consultants, and government agencies.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to handle confidential, sensitive, and sacred information with discretion and respect.
  • Analytical and research skills related to historical documentation, cultural resources, and preservation planning.
  • Familiarity with archival preservation techniques for the conservation of cultural documents and materials.
  • Proficiency with standard office technology, recordkeeping systems, and basic database tools.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and follow direction from leadership.
  • Commitment to ethical conduct, professionalism, and Tribal values.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug tests as requested over the course of employment.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License, have a safe driving record, and be insurable under the Tribe’s vehicle policy.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel in and out of state for training, conferences, and meetings as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or related field (preferred).
  • Minimum three (3) years related experience (preferred).
  • Minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience (preferred).
  • Experience with grant support activities and documentation preferred.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with cultural resource consultation under NHPA Section 106, SEPA, NEPA, NAGPRA, and related regulations.
  • Support consultation with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Assist with fieldwork, monitoring, and reconnaissance.
  • Maintain and update archaeological collections and records.
  • Support accession and deaccession of cultural materials.
  • Assist with surveys and cultural resource inventories.
  • Support review of construction and development permits.
  • Assist with National Register nominations.
  • Support public education and outreach.
  • Assist with reports, grants, and THPO deliverables.
  • Support grant writing and administration.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department Executive Director or THPO.
