About The Position

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an editor to help shepherd its Sports coverage. This role involves editing must-read stories about the most dynamic people and institutions in sports, guiding the Journal’s distinctive sports coverage with an authoritative voice. The coverage aims to break news, tell impactful stories, and react quickly, taking a unique perspective on some of the world’s most popular events. WSJ Sports specializes in unexpected stories that appeal to both hard-core fans and readers who do not consider themselves sports enthusiasts. The ideal candidate will be an experienced editor comfortable juggling breaking news on big games with quick-turnaround deadlines, as well as deeper enterprise reporting on the major issues animating sports fans globally.

Requirements

  • Impeccable writing and editing skills.
  • A knack for distilling complex ideas into simple terms and captivating stories.
  • Creative ideas for telling stories in new ways and formats.
  • A keen sense of the Journal’s audience and laser-focus on distinctive journalism.
  • The ability to exercise news judgment under intense pressure.
  • A track record of handling breaking news on deadline.
  • The drive to coordinate with teams across the newsroom to bring big stories to life.
  • Familiarity with the level of rigor required to meet newsroom standards for publishing.
  • 4-8 years editing experience (experienced reporters with exceptional writing skills are also encouraged to apply).
  • The ability to use digital-publishing tools to produce engaging journalism across the Journal’s publishing platforms.
  • A deep interest in Sports and the ability to speak knowledgeably across disciplines.
  • Exceptional display skills and a sophisticated understanding of how to grab audience attention across platforms.
  • A sense of humor, including a demonstrated ability to find clever, intelligent ways into stories that are being widely covered.
  • A talent for writing snappy, attention-grabbing headlines.
  • A sharp eye for story framing.
  • A meticulous approach to getting facts and details exactly right.
  • Visual thinking and a vested interest in how your stories will look and present across platforms.
  • A collaborative, team-player attitude, an upbeat outlook and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Flexibility to be available on nights and weekends when required.

  • Handle deeper enterprise reporting on major issues animating sports fans.
  • Coordinate with teams across the newsroom to bring big stories to life.
  • Bulletproof fast-moving news stories on deadline with sourcing, legal and ethical considerations.
  • Ensure the top-tier execution and ethical standards of The Wall Street Journal and WSJ. Magazine are consistently met.
  • Ensure work is of impeccable quality across all platforms.
  • Ensure The Journal’s codes of conduct and overall Standards & Ethics rules are scrupulously met.
  • Use digital-publishing tools to produce engaging journalism across the Journal’s publishing platforms.
  • Write stories on occasion.
  • Push your team to avoid errors and bulletproof high-profile, visible stories with an attention to detail.
