About The Position

Deputy Sheriff (NDT 26-01) ( Please note: This posting is for individuals who have law enforcement experience and currently meet the requirements for certification as outlined by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement) Posting Closes: March 8, 2026 Tentative Class Start: June 2026 Starting Salary: $26.65 hourly, $59,589.40 annually (based on 12-hour scheduling) Sign-on bonus available based on years of experience (2-4 years $5,000, 5-7 years $10,000, 8+ years $15,000). To qualify for the sign-on bonus, the candidate must be hired specifically for the purpose of filling a full-time road patrol assignment. Hours: Rotating 12-hour schedule every four (4) months weekends, evenings, and holidays. Training: All newly hired certified Deputy Sheriffs (regardless of experience) must go through New Deputy Training (NDT). This training will cover all high liability areas, including driving, shooting, defensive tactics, and agency policies and procedures. After successful completion of NDT, new hires must complete and pass Deputy Training Officer (DTO) training before receiving an assignment. General Description: Under general supervision of a Law Enforcement Sergeant, or designee, performs general law enforcement work of average difficulty and responsibility in the preservation and protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, the maintenance of good public order, the enforcement of civil and criminal law, and other related duties as required by direction or assignment. All assignments involve responsibility for recognizing the social importance of the law enforcement function and for conscientious and effective performance of duties without immediate supervision. Deputy exercises judgment and individual initiative in the performance of routine duties and in emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Requirement to meet the standards of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as authorized by F.S.S. 943.13
  • Must be nineteen (19) years of age
  • A Citizen of the United States
  • Must have and maintain a valid Florida Drivers License (minimum Class E)
  • High School graduation or equivalent
  • No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving perjury or a false statement
  • No dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States
  • Fingerprints on file with the employing agency
  • Passed a physical examination by a licensed physician based on specification established by the Commission
  • Good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission
  • Applicants will undergo a polygraph, psychological examination
  • Must successfully complete the Volusia Sheriffs Office Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP)
  • This position will require an extensive background investigation and drug screening.
