The Captain is a sworn Law Enforcement Officer and is the Commander of an assigned Division within a Bureau. The Captain may work as a Field Deputy or in the CJF performing inspections, audits, compliance & safety duties & other duties as assigned. The Captain is a vital part of the division/bureau management and may provide Night Command after hours. Captain positions help to set & execute the goals and objectives and are responsible for the mission of their assigned area.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED and at least 60 college credits
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and must be maintained throughout employment
  • Law Enforcement Standards Board certification through the State of Wisconsin
  • At least Five (5) years’ work experience in a sworn Law Enforcement Certified position required
  • At least (1) year of supervisory work experience as a Sworn Lieutenant or equivalent rank with a sworn Law Enforcement agency
  • Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications (e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel)

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Division Administration: Serves as the Division Commander of the assigned division, including planning, research, analysis, development, evaluation and the day-to-day operations of the division. Provides assistance to the Inspectors in the management of the bureau. Also, the Captain position may work as a Field Deputy or in the CJF, performing inspections, audits, safety & compliance related duties. The Captain position may be responsible for seeking out, drafting, writing and managing the day-to-day execution of grants as well as the management of ongoing projects, particularly those with external partners.
  • Division Management: As a collateral duty, Captains may be assigned additional duties, such as the Night Commander during 2nd & 3rd shift during the week and weekends in addition to their regular work hours or given an agency command assignment with responsibility as the Incident Commander, etc.
  • Direction of Division Personnel: Supervise the activities of the personnel assigned to the division. Respond to citizen complaints. Review work of supervisory personnel. Administer work rules and review employee conduct. The Captain will oversee the training needs of the Division.
  • Committee Participation: Responsible for participation in internal committees and with external partners based upon assigned division to coordinate activities when necessary.
  • Professional Development: Provide professional development planning as part of ongoing succession planning to maintain proficiencies particularly related to activities requiring extensive training and experience, such as OWI enforcement, truck inspections, specialty units, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.
