About The Position

Provides for the protection of life and property through fire prevention efforts, including fire/arson investigation, fire code enforcement, construction plan review, and public education/training.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, Fire Investigation, Fire Prevention, or related field
  • Six (6) years of related experience in fire suppression, prevention, investigation, and emergency response
  • or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Certified Firefighter certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Emergency Medical Services certification (EMT-Basic, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Fire Inspector I certification (or equivalent recognized by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Basic or Advanced Fire/Arson Investigator certification.
  • Must possess and maintain Hazardous Materials Operations or Technician certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain an In-Service Instructor Certification within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Must maintain all required certifications in an active status without lapse.
  • Must participate in continuing education as required to maintain certifications.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with appropriate endorsement.
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret regulations, and fire codes effectively.
  • Ability to supervise personnel and coordinate complex operations.
  • Ability to operate firefighting and investigative equipment safely.
  • Strong communication, report writing, and public education skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in emergency and high-risk situations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction, supervision, and coordination of fire prevention, inspection, and investigation activities; assigns, prioritizes, and evaluates work of assigned personnel; monitors progress and ensures completion in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Interprets, applies, and enforces all applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards related to fire prevention, life safety, and hazardous materials; initiates corrective or enforcement actions when violations are identified.
  • Conducts comprehensive fire and arson investigations to determine origin and cause; secures and manages fire scenes; identifies, collects, preserves, and documents physical evidence; coordinates with law enforcement agencies and submits evidence to appropriate forensic laboratories.
  • Conducts interviews and interrogations of witnesses, victims, and suspects; prepares detailed written investigative reports and documentation suitable for criminal prosecution and court testimony; may be required to testify in administrative or judicial proceedings.
  • Performs fire and life safety inspections of commercial, industrial, and multi-family occupancies to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes and approved construction plans; documents findings and ensures corrective actions are completed.
  • Reviews architectural drawings, site development plans, and construction documents to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes; approves, denies, or recommends modifications to plans based on compliance requirements.
  • Issues notices of violation, warnings, and citations for non-compliance with fire codes and ordinances; conducts follow-up inspections; prepares and maintains case files for administrative hearings or court proceedings.
  • Responds to and investigates complaints related to fire hazards, unsafe structures, or fire code violations; documents findings and implements corrective or enforcement actions as necessary.
  • Develops, coordinates, and delivers fire prevention and life safety education programs for department personnel, businesses, schools, and the general public; conducts training related to fire extinguisher use, fire safety practices, and code compliance.
  • Supervises and coordinates pre-fire planning activities, including inspection of structures for fire hazards, documentation of building layouts, and identification of operational considerations for emergency response.
  • Performs quality assurance and quality control reviews of fire reports, inspection reports, and related documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with departmental policies and regulatory standards.
  • Participates in internal investigations related to personnel conduct, safety incidents, or operational concerns; documents findings and provides recommendations for corrective action.
  • Responds to emergency incidents, including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, rescues, and natural disasters; may assume command of emergency scenes and direct suppression, rescue, and mitigation operations.
  • Performs firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical care duties as required; operates fire apparatus and specialized equipment; utilizes appropriate tactics to protect life, property, and the environment.
  • Determines incident strategy and resource allocation; ensures proper placement and use of apparatus, equipment, and personnel; maintains scene safety and accountability.
  • Maintains operational readiness of assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools; conducts inspections, testing, and basic maintenance; reports deficiencies and ensures timely repairs.
  • Prepares, reviews, and maintains a variety of reports, records, and documentation, including but not limited to: fire investigation reports, inspection reports, incident reports, training records, and compliance documentation.
  • Maintains accurate records and files related to inspections, investigations, permits, and enforcement actions in accordance with departmental policies and legal requirements.
  • Communicates effectively with internal personnel, other government agencies, law enforcement, legal representatives, contractors, business owners, and the public to coordinate activities, exchange information, and resolve issues.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, training programs, professional development activities, and continuing education to maintain certifications and stay current with industry standards and best practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of emerging trends, technologies, and regulatory changes in fire prevention, investigation, and emergency response.
  • Performs administrative duties, including report preparation, data analysis, budget input, inventory management, and program evaluation.
  • Ensures compliance with departmental safety policies and procedures; identifies unsafe conditions and implements corrective actions to protect personnel and the public.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support departmental operations and organizational objectives.
