About The Position

Incumbent supervises and coordinates the activities of the Fire Department, including firefighting, emergency response, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, emergency medical services, and fire marshal personnel. Ensures compliance with fire and life safety codes.

Requirements

Knowledge of firefighting and prevention practices and procedures.
Knowledge of fire prevention and life safety inspection techniques
Knowledge of fire investigation methods and procedures
Knowledge of emergency medical techniques.
Knowledge of, and ability to apply, management and leadership principles and techniques
Knowledge of the Connecticut Fire Safety Codes.
Considerable oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
Basic working knowledge of building codes.
Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field, and Five (5) years’ experience at the level of Battalion Chief or above in an organized firefighting unit.
Associate’s degree in Fire Science or related field, and Six (6) years’ experience at the level of Battalion Chief or above in an organized firefighting unit.
High School diploma or equivalent, and Eight (8) years’ experience at the level of Battalion Chief or above in an organized firefighting unit.
CDL or Q license (or other state’s equivalent)

Fire Officer III
Fire Instructor III
HazMat Technician, 40-hour EPA
Incident Command (NIMS-400 level)
Incident Safety Officer
Must maintain sponsor hospital medical control credentials
Facial hair must not interfere with a respirator mask
Must pass a medical examination annually, including a respiratory test
Must perform strenuous or peak physical efforts during emergency, training, or station maintenance activity for a prolonged period of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke
