The Deputy Division Director (DDD) works with the Division Director to provide scientific, strategic and administrative leadership of the Nanoscience & Technology (NST) division and of the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) user facility. Participation and leadership in the development of short/long-term strategic directions, planning, goal setting, and benchmarking of CNM and NST activities are examples of typical duties. The DDD will also play an active role in day- to-day management of the division`s programs, ensuring efficiency of operation. The DDD works collaboratively with laboratory, academic, and industrial partners to develop, build and manage a high profile academic and industrial user portfolio of the CNM in a world class research environment. The DDD also actively performs research and works directly with users. Major responsibilities: In cooperation with the Division Director, provides leadership and management of the division`s scientific programs. Seeks and develops new funding opportunities by developing productive partnerships with the Department of Energy (DOE), academic, industrial and other scientific research organizations. Builds and manages a high-profile user portfolio. Works collaboratively with principal investigators, users, and operations partners to oversee the management of programs ensuring quality, safety and efficiency of operations. Works with the Director and with scientific groups to set priorities, allocate resources and manage programs. Works to develop new instrumentation for the facility. Carries out independent research and maintains an active role in research activities keeping abreast of new and emerging scientific developments and technologies. Acts as a spokesperson for the division and prepares and presents reports related to planning, strategy, benchmarking and scientific results to division management, user and review committees, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and DOE. Position Requirements Qualifications: The level of knowledge and skill required for this position is typically achieved through a combination of scientific, technical and managerial expertise gained through a PhD in the physical sciences, at least ten years of research experience in experimental materials science or applied physics, and experience in a managerial role. An excellent track record of scientific research and publications is expected. Comprehensive knowledge of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop productive collaborations with sponsors/scientists within ANL and with other academic/scientific organizations. Outstanding oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with internal and external contacts to achieve established goals. Strong leadership skills with previous experience in the development of technical programs, and in management of technical groups, scientists, engineers, and support staff. Ability to manage budgets and resources for a scientific program.
