About The Position

The Facilities Division at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) manages, operates, maintains, and engineers the site infrastructure, which spans 1,500 acres, 150 buildings, and over 5 million square feet of facilities. The division includes eight departments: Facilities Engineering, Building Management, Fire Protection Program, Building Maintenance, Utility Systems, APS Site Operations, Custodial, and Amenities. The Deputy Division Director provides leadership, management, and technical guidance across all departments and functions within the Facilities Division. This role supports the Division Director in achieving divisional goals and objectives, ensuring operational excellence, and maintaining compliance with DOE and Laboratory standards.

Requirements

  • Expertise in site and facilities management, engineering, operations, logistics, and construction.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, financial management skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Field knowledge of engineering, site operations, maintenance, construction safety, and applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (from an accredited program).
  • At least 10 years of experience in facility engineering, operations, project management, and related functions.
  • Significant leadership experience (minimum of 5 years) managing multiple facilities departments and organizations.
  • Experience managing both engineering and frontline workforce in an institutional or campus environment.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Leaders at Argonne are expected to demonstrate a high level of competency, including strategic agility, team building, clear communication, trust-building, and accountability.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master’s in Engineering or a related advanced technical degree.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Familiarity with DOE and Laboratory policies, including ES&H principles, work rules, and safe practices.
  • Experience managing facilities within a national laboratory, research campus, or large institutional infrastructure environment.
  • Experience leading large capital infrastructure programs, modernization initiatives, and long-term infrastructure planning.
  • Demonstrated strong business and financial acumen.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Division Director with technical, leadership, and administrative activities required to direct the overall planning, program management, financial management, engineering, project management, sitewide services (custodial, amenities), facilities management & operations, utility systems, and maintenance functions for the effective utilization, improvement, acquisition, and disposition of infrastructure in support of Argonne’s mission.
  • Provide specific leadership to select departments as designated by Division Director
  • Collaborate with the Division Director to establish divisional goals, objectives, and priorities.
  • Represent the Division Director in their absence.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with Laboratory Management, DOE sponsors, external agencies, and counterparts at other National Laboratories.
  • Assist in planning, program management, financial management, engineering, project management, and sitewide services (custodial, amenities).
  • Oversee facilities management, operations, utility systems, and maintenance functions to support Argonne’s mission.
  • Ensure compliance with DOE regulations, safety standards, and environmental requirements.
  • Provide management and engineering support for safety programs, including incident investigations, assessments, and recordkeeping.
  • Promote a culture of safety and ensure adherence to Argonne’s ES&H policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement processes to enhance cost-effectiveness, efficiency, reliability, and safety.
  • Prioritize divisional processes for improvement and innovation.
  • Assist in select recruiting, mentoring, training, and developing divisional staff.
  • Provide direction for performance management and employee relations.
  • Support contract negotiations with bargaining units and implement contract clauses.
  • Participate in select decisions regarding employee discipline and terminations.
