About The Position

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems. The Director of Teacher Mentorship will play a critical role in improving the retention and effectiveness of new teachers across Texas through the design and implementation of effective mentoring programs. This individual will be part of the Talent Pathways division, which oversees the implementation of strategic staffing to maximize the impact of highly effective teachers, pre- and early-service teacher mentorship, and teacher pathways into leadership and administrative roles. This individual will oversee the planning, implementation and execution of the Preparing and Retaining Educators through Partnership (PREP) Mentorship program, including the development of the Texas Mentorship training. This individual will direct the planning of the field supervisor training pathway within the Texas Mentorship training suite. Additionally, this role will oversee the planning and execution of the training provider strategy, including overseeing the grant management of the ESC fellows grant. This position will require advanced strategic planning, project management, and stakeholder engagement with senior internal and external leaders. The Director, Teacher Mentorship will directly manage two education specialists and report to the Director of Teacher Leadership and Advancement within the Office of Educator and System Support. Flexible work location within the state of Texas may be considered for qualified candidates.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university
  • At least five (5) years of experience in education
  • An advanced degree may substitute for two years of required experience
  • Share the belief that all Texas students can achieve at high levels and are able to succeed in college, career, or the military
  • Experience supervising direct reports or leading cross-functional teams
  • Prior experience in a leadership role with responsibility for team performance and outcomes
  • An ability to lead by influence to build investment in action towards a shared vision and strategic plan
  • An ability to develop and manage project plans with multiple, cross-functional owners to execute milestones, track progress, and ensure on-time and high-quality deliverables
  • An ability to create clarity when ambiguity exists; ask strategic questions, gather and synthesize information, and plan next steps
  • An ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, using practical and accessible language
  • An ability to communicate utilize systems and tools to balance the demands of multiple projects at different stages of development while maintaining quality and consistency across all work

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as an instructional leader and broad knowledge of Texas education landscape
  • Previous experience with Texas Strategic Staffing, Texas Instructional Leadership, teacher preparation, or implementation of High-quality Instructional Materials preferred

Responsibilities

  • PREP Mentorship Program Implementation: Directs the strategic planning and implementation of the PREP Mentorship Program. Ensures strong performance management practices, clear and concise guidance and rules, timely district compliance reporting, efficient and accurate funding and settle-up processes, and effective communication processes for participating school systems. Directs the analysis, development, and implementation of policy related to teacher mentoring. Additionally, tracks and analyzes research and policies related to educator preparation and strategic staffing. Works with cross-functional teams to design and implement connected policies for pre- and early service teachers such as coordinated rulemaking, grant programs, and technical assistance for school systems and preparation programs. Directs the development and implementation of intentional short- and long-term change management and stakeholder engagement strategies.
  • Field Supervisor Training Development and Implementation: Oversee the development and implementation of the Texas Mentorship Training for educator preparation program staff and field supervisors. Manage multiple contractors to develop the training content and ensure alignment across agency priorities.

  • Training Provider Capacity Development: Develops the vision and strategy to support Texas Mentorship Training approved providers.
  • Team Management and Supervision: Supports a positive division culture that prioritizes effective feedback, open collaboration, and quality of work. Supports, advises, and coaches an education specialist and collaborates in cross-functional spaces to ensure alignment of initiatives. Ensures strong project oversight, task management, and prioritization of work.
