About The Position

Directs, facilitates and integrates the administration of department functions to include the areas of intake screening and assessment, court liaison, substance abuse, community programs and field supervision to ensure effective delivery of professional services in compliance with department standards and policies and applicable federal, state and local laws. Management Scope: Manages generally two hundred (200) exempt and non-exempt staff members and accountable for approximately $6.5million in operating budget expenditures and contract services.

Requirements

  • Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, or in a job related field of study.
  • Five (5) years of professional work related experience, to include four (4) years of managerial experience.
  • Knowledge of standard software applications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public.
  • Must be a Certified Probation Officer or become certified within 6 months after employment.
  • Extensive knowledge of probation, parole, and the criminal justice system process.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License, with good driving record.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Mandatory drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • “Position requires working with juveniles who may have committed dangerous/aggressive acts; should possess a high tolerance for working in an emotionally demanding/stressful work environment.”
  • Must be at least 21 years of age (for applicable positions) and must pass all portions (physical/written) of the Juvenile Academy to continue employment or all standards related to PREA and Ethics for specific positions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct supervision to managers of community programs, probation services and court services and supervisors of the intake screening and assessment and court liaison units.
  • Maintains direct contact with the juvenile courts regarding departmental recommendations, programming, staffing, policies, availability of resources through contract services and courtroom testimony.
  • Serves as Administrative Co-Chair of the Case Planning and Review Committee and provides oversight of all court related recommended decisions regarding contractual and private placement and commitments to the Texas Youth Commission.
  • Collaborates with the Deputy Directors of Administrative Services and Institutional Services and the Chief Psychologist to ensure an effective and efficient delivery of services.
  • Collaborates with community and governmental agencies to establish programs, procedures and promote positive working relationships.
  • Performs personnel functions, to include recruitment, hiring, training, performance reviews and corrective actions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
