About The Position

The Deputy Coroner performs a variety of working level technical tasks designed to expedite the review, analysis, documentation and reporting of deaths and related causes occurring within the jurisdiction of Canyon County. This position works under the board policy guidance and the direction of the County Coroner or Chief Deputy.

Requirements

  • Resident of Canyon County
  • Valid Idaho driver’s license
  • Must successfully complete a CJIS background investigation
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Two years of law enforcement field experience preferably in accident/crime scene investigation or training in a medically sponsored programs or related field
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the knowledge and abilities to perform the work
  • Clear speech with or without accommodation, to effectively convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly and/or quickly
  • Sufficient clarity of hearing with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information
  • Visual acuity, with or without an accommodation, to read instructions, review and organize documents
  • Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment to accomplish tasks
  • May be exposed to adverse weather conditions and potential personal danger
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, stamina, strength, agility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to direct traffic, bend or stoop repeatedly, maneuver through and over rough, uneven, slippery or rocky terrain, perform search activities for extended periods of time, physically apprehend and restrain an individual, and perform all duties required in a law enforcement environment
  • Requires emotional and psychological resilience when exposed to sensitive and potentially traumatic case material
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 100 lbs with most of the bodies weighing over 100 pounds
  • Some knowledge of laboratory methods, processes and procedures specific to death scene and evidence investigation techniques of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, various types of equipment and chemicals essential to forensic testing, control and preservation of evidence, photography and related processes
  • Awareness of hazards and safety practices associated with chemicals and infectious diseases
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and county laws and ordinances
  • Knowledge of applicable department rules, regulations and standard operational procedures
  • Ability to work cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the highest quality and quantity
  • Ability to observe situations, record them and react quickly and calmly
  • Ability to exhibit imagination, initiative and problem-solving capability in dealing with variety of death scene situations and criminal investigations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to act with tact and impartiality

Responsibilities

  • Upon notification of death and determination of jurisdictional responsibility, conducts examinations to determine circumstances and cause of death.
  • Examines scenes, takes samples to utilize forensic processes and procedures to determine possibility of death caused by other than natural causes, accident, self-inflicted wounds or homicide.
  • Assures proper chain of evidence in criminal cases.
  • Coordinates with various law enforcement agencies & investigators, physicians, hospitals, paramedics and all other agencies.
  • Testifies in court pertaining to criminal or civil cases involving death.
  • Locates or assists to locate relatives of deceased person.
  • Delivers or releases to family members or turns over to county to act as executor.
  • Performs a variety of clerical functions related to creation and maintenance of case logs, files and materials, type of correspondence, reports and subpoenas.
  • Prepares monthly coroner supply and inventory reports, stocks and accounts for supplies and materials.
  • Performs all work duties and activities following county policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • All other duties as assigned.
