About The Position

The Deputy Chief / Fire Marshal serves as a key member of the Fire Department leadership team. This position assists the Fire Chief with daily operations, personnel management, and emergency response readiness while also carrying responsibility for the Fire Marshal functions, including fire prevention, inspection, investigation, and code enforcement. The position ensures the department meets its mission of protecting life, property, and community safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Significant experience in fire suppression, prevention, and leadership, typically 7+ years in the fire service with supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of modern firefighting methods, fire codes, and emergency management practices.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce fire safety codes and ordinances.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure and sound judgment in stressful situations.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator
  • Firefighter II
  • Utah AEMT or higher
  • Current BLS, ACLS and PALS and IS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in fire science, public administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Certification as Fire Officer I (or higher) and Fire Inspector/Fire Marshal certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Fire Chief in planning, directing, and coordinating department operations.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and supervision to fire personnel.
  • Oversees daily staffing, scheduling, training, and resource allocation.
  • Responds to fire and emergency incidents as needed, assuming command when appropriate.
  • Assists in the preparation and administration of department policies and procedures
  • Represents the department at meetings, committees, and community events.
  • Acts as the Fire Chief in their absence.
  • Administers and enforces fire codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conducts fire safety inspections of residential, commercial, and public buildings.
  • Leads fire investigations to determine origin and cause.
  • Develops and delivers fire prevention and public education programs.
  • Works with developers, contractors, and the public to ensure code compliance.
  • Coordinates with law enforcement and other agencies on investigations and enforcement actions.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports related to fire prevention, inspections, and investigations.
  • Builds strong working relationships with other county departments, outside agencies, and the community.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws governing fire safety and emergency response.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.
