About The Position

The Deputy CFO supports the CFO by managing day-to-day financial operations, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, and compliance. Key duties include overseeing staff, managing cash flow, preparing for audits, and strengthening internal controls. This role ensures financial data integrity and supports strategic planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or Master’s degree is often preferred.
  • Typically requires 10 years of progressive financial leadership, with significant experience specifically in the nonprofit or public sector.
  • Deep understanding of GAAP, non-profit tax compliance, and automated accounting systems.
  • Experience with ICF/IID, Medicaid reimbursement, and HHSC regulations is highly valued.
  • Expertise in non-profit accounting principles, investment strategies (endowments, asset allocation), and risk management.
  • Proficiency in non-profit financial software and advanced Excel skills
  • Experience in global currency trends and develop mitigation strategies for foreign exchange exposure.

  • CPA Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Typically, 8 to 15 plus years of experience of progressive financial experience, strong leadership skills.
  • Expertise in budgeting, financial modeling, non-profit or public sector experience, proficiency in ERP System such Acumatica and advance spreadsheet analysis and technical writing skills to develop protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize and lead in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Operations & Reporting: Oversee the daily accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, and monthly closing processes. Prepare accurate financial statements and reports for the board and stakeholders.
  • Budgeting & Strategy: Assist in developing annual budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial plans to support organizational goals.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure adherence to GAAP, tax regulations (IRS, international), and grant restrictions and Medicaid funding. Implement internal controls to mitigate financial risk.
  • Compliance & Audit: Leads annual audit preparations, serves as a liaison to external auditors, and ensures adherence to GAAP and IRS nonprofit reporting requirements (like Form 990).
  • Indirect Cost Negotiation: Lead the calculation and negotiation of overhead/indirect cost rates (e.g., NICRA) to ensure the organization is fully compensated for program costs.
  • Grant & Fund Management: Manage financial compliance for grants, including tracking restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Fixed Asset Oversight: Maintains the master fixed asset ledger, ensuring accurate depreciation schedules.
  • Investment & Endowment Oversight: Support oversight of the organization’s endowment in collaboration with the CFO and external investment advisors.
  • Board & Committee Support: Prepares materials and presentations for the Board’s Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees.
  • Leadership: Supervise, train, and mentor accounting staff.
  • Global Financial Management: Oversee consolidated financial reporting for multiple country operations, ensuring compliance with local laws and international standards.
  • Research, analyze, and implement changes in business processes and systems that will improve efficiency and internal controls
  • Evaluate the organization’s financial performance through financial analysis.
