About The Position

This position is responsible for technical administrative and supervisory work assisting the Chief Building Official in directing and coordinating the operation of the Building Division and the enforcement of the various codes; laws and ordinances regulating construction; and the use and of occupancy of buildings, structures and lands, whether public or private. The Deputy Building Official has the primary responsibility to assure that the safety and health of the public is maintained through adherence to those requirements as established by law. This position reports to the Chief Building Official.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years experience as an architect, engineer, inspector, contractor, or any combination thereof.
  • Possess or must be qualified, as evidenced by documentation meeting the requirements of Florida Statute 468, to obtain State of Florida Certification as a Building Code Administrator within one year of date of employment.
  • Possess Florida Licensure as a One & Two Family Dwelling inspector and at least one of the following, Building, Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s license issued by the State of Florida with an acceptable driving record.
  • The applicant must have the ability to clearly and concisely articulate facts and recommendations to groups such as the Planning Board, Special Magistrate, the City Commission and other State or local agencies.
  • The applicant must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and be able to prepare efficient reports that are easily understandable to other professionals and the general public.
  • The applicant must have the ability to develop long-term plans and to evaluate work accomplishments, and ability to establish harmonious relationships with other employees and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the organization of office activities and provides supervision to inspections and plans divisions
  • Evaluates staff performance levels and customer services.
  • Reviews building and site plans.
  • Provides technical assistance to City staff.
  • Sit as a member of the Technical Review Committee.
  • Conducts building and site inspections.
  • Reviews soil density reports.
  • Provides water, sewer and other impact fee calculations for builders, the public and the City water department.
  • When required, collects monies due for fees.
  • Presents facts and recommendations to various appointed or elected boards and committees.
  • Presents testimony in court or to the Special Magistrate.
  • All other related duties as assigned.
  • During emergency conditions, all City of DeLand employees are automatically considered emergency service workers.
  • City of DeLand employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane or other emergency and are expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.
