About The Position

The Attorney General is the State's top lawyer and law enforcement official, protecting and serving the people and interests of California through a broad range of duties. The Attorney General is the head of the Department of Justice, which is one of the largest state agencies, as well as one of the largest law offices in California. The Department has numerous constituent bureaus and programs, and the Department performs a variety of important law enforcement, legal advice, and criminal justice information functions. The Office of General Counsel is a division within the Department of Justice that oversees or supports many Department-wide functions, including risk management, compliance, legal advice, ethics, regulations, and public records. Within the Office of General Counsel, a specialized group of transactional attorneys advise the State Treasurer, the Department of Finance, the State Controller, and other state departments and financing agencies on high-profile bond, finance, and other fiscal matters. This Public Finance & Contracts team negotiates, drafts, edits, and reviews financing documents in complex, multiparty transactions; prepares and communicates advice through memoranda, opinion letters, and emails; represents clients at authority, board, commission, and committee meetings; and drafts and reviews public-finance-related legislation. Attorneys also provide legal advice to other Department of Justice units, especially on the topics of procurement, contracts, and related transactional matters. Prior public-finance experience is a strong plus for this position, but attorneys with a track record of accomplishment in a transactional practice or who demonstrate the potential to succeed in a transactional practice are also encouraged to apply for this position.
