JOB SUMMARY To treat and educate patients in the control and prevention of oral disease such as caries (cavities) and periodontal (gum) disease through proper oral hygiene and regular professional care.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and adherence to safety rules and professional standards.
  • Ability to facilitate, supervise, and motivate the effective provision of high-quality dental care.
  • Knowledge and respect of American Indian culture.
  • Associate's degree in dental hygiene
  • Licensure in the State of Minnesota
  • Competence in operation of standard dental equipment: cavitron, prophyjet, use of EMR (EPIC) and digital radiographs, including Panorex, dental chair and units, sterilizers, hand scalers, and curettes.

Responsibilities

  • Performs dental prophylaxis, removing deposits (plaque, tartar, and stain) from the teeth.
  • Takes and develops necessary radiographs.
  • Examines teeth and gums for signs of disease or decay. Charts such conditions for further diagnosis and treatment by dentist and for proper patient record maintenance.
  • Applies anesthetic to the area in the month for treatment.
  • Instructs patients using effective communication techniques on proper dental health and oral hygiene.
  • Complete documentation of the chart as necessary for follow-up.
  • Maintain dental equipment and inventory.
  • Follow universal precautions and all Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) requirements to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Participate in QA/QI activities as needed.
