About The Position

The Dean provides strategic leadership, planning, administration, and evaluation of the portfolio, including programs, employees, policies, procedures, facilities and budget in accordance with the College’s strategic and academic goals. Working with employees and other constituents, the Dean leads the development of a shared vision, mission and goals that encompass the Faculty. The Dean leads the faculty team and provides strategic leadership for a mix of career, university transfer, post-degree credentials and baccalaureate programs in the faculty and promotes and supports activities that advance teaching and learning, as well as emerging scholarship and applied research activities within the area. The Dean fosters an environment in which personal and academic integrity, cross-cultural understanding, student engagement and well-being flourish. The Dean utilizes the College’s strategic framework to allocate faculty resources for the creation and implementation of innovative programs that prepare students to be responsible, productive, informed and reflective citizens, scholars, and creative leaders.

Requirements

  • Relevant graduate degree (PhD preferred) in addition to a minimum of ten (10) years of related working experience including at least seven years’ employment with increasing responsibilities in post-secondary education or another relevant sector.
  • Previous post-secondary teaching experience is essential.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience in strategic planning.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of operational plans.
  • Proven track record of curriculum development, including applied baccalaureate degrees and post-degree credentials.
  • Understanding of the principles and practices of quality assurance, program review and renewal.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic enrolment management.
  • Considerable knowledge of and experience with budgetary processes, including the development and administration of budgets.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with the administration of collective agreements.
  • Experience in a variety of modes of teaching and learning.
  • Impeccable interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals in a variety of consultative and collaborative processes
  • Superior ability to develop, interpret, and apply College, government, agency, and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines, and collective agreements.
  • Ability to think and lead creatively and strategically
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, motivate and empower a team

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership: Articulates a shared vision, mission and goals for the Faculty, consistent with the College’s strategic and Academic plans, and based on current best practices.
  • Participates in advising, coordinating, and decision-making on College-wide operational and strategic matters.
  • Provides leadership in the development of new programs and oversees curriculum in the Faculty.
  • Allocates resources to support the success of programs and initiatives.
  • Supports and assists the development of international initiatives within the Faculty.
  • Develops an operational plan for the Faculty on an annual basis.
  • Ensures the quality and integrity of programs and academic offerings within the Faculty.
  • Supports and assists academic program review and renewal.
  • Encourages and supports scholarship and applied research among faculty.
  • Develops operating structures, policies, procedures, and communications within the Faculty and, where appropriate, in the College.
  • Ensures decisions are communicated within the Faculty and College and the external community.
  • Actions and follows-up on student concerns and issues as appropriate.
  • Management of human resources: Direct oversight and responsibility for the fair and equitable administration of human resources related matters in collaboration with the Provost, VP People and Culture, and other senior administrators, within the scope of College policy and collective agreements.
  • Ensures that the selection, assignment, evaluation, development, and discipline of faculty and staff are congruent with College policy and collective agreements.
  • Works collegially with diverse constituencies and delegates responsibilities and the necessary authority to Division Chair(s), as appropriate.
  • Promotes and supports the professional development of faculty and staff within the Faculty.
  • Mentors and coaches direct reports by building and supporting a positive internal environment.
  • Budgeting, resource allocation, and the overall financial management of the Faculty: Leads within allocated annual budget.
  • Develops an annual budget for the Faculty, in consultation with the Division Chair(s).
  • Prepares an annual strategic initiative/service budget request in consultation with appropriate constituencies.
  • Monitors productivity within the Faculty and makes adjustments in a fair and timely manner to achieve the approved Operating Plan; and ensures the activities and services of the Plan remain within budgetary limits.
  • Allocates instructional resources to maximize resource utilization and balance in response to enrolment patterns and strategic initiatives.
  • Represents the College and Faculty in its external liaison with other post-secondary institutions, government agencies, committees and community: Represents the College to internal and external community constituencies in an effective and collegial manner.
  • Serves as a College Ambassador at internal and external constituency events.
  • Represent the College on special initiatives or task forces related to the Faculty at the provincial, national or international level.
  • Attends and provides advice as requested at all relevant internal and external committee meetings.
  • Represents the College and the Faculty to the Program Advisory Committees of the Faculty.
  • Maintains knowledge of current developments in post-secondary education.
  • Be prepared to work in close collaboration with the college community, Musqueam and other Indigenous communities to create and implement an Indigenization action plan for the college that strengthens our relationships with Indigenous communities and creates real and meaningful systemic change at the college.
  • Can demonstrate the right intentions and understanding of Indigenous cultures, history, language, and issues, as well as the principles of respect, relationship, responsibility, and reciprocity.
  • Positioned to build relationships with community and support Indigenization and reconciliation as a “living in relationship” with Indigenous peoples in a good way over the long term.
  • Has experience working with Indigenous peoples and has created programs and services that support Indigenous learners, Indigenized curriculum, and/or who has created systemic change at the college.
  • Has experience working through complex issues with Indigenous students, community, and current issues that arise on campus, and knows when they need to take the lead and when to step back.
