About The Position

Dean of Students Position Narrative The Dean of Students is an educational leader who supports Power Technical (PTEC) in fulfilling its mission of character development and academic excellence. The Dean works closely with the students, developing a trusting relationship with them that allows him/her to be a resource to the students if they have problems. The Dean is responsible for implementing student award activities and orchestrates student extra-curricular activities. The Dean is the primary school disciplinarian. The Dean is an integral part of the school leadership team and therefore must be fully supportive of the roles, duties and decisions of the Principal and Assistant Principal. Reports to: School Principal Supervises: Assistant to the Dean

Requirements

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, students and parents
  • Knowledge of No Child Left Behind and all appropriate state and district school law regarding discipline
  • Flexible, positive, solution-based, team-player attitude, willing to self-advocate and be proactive when unsure about processes or procedures
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding executive, administrative, faculty, staff, student and parent information
  • Bachelor degree and three years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Responsibilities

  • Student Discipline: Investigate, resolve and enforce consequences for student misbehavior. This requires meeting with students, faculty, parents and any other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Schedule detention supervision (ISS, behavioral and academic) and supervise as necessary.
  • Organize and oversee the Judicial Committee and Administrative Judicial Committee activities.
  • Keep the Student Handbook updated by coordinating edits and securing a publisher.
  • Work closely with the other school administrators to determine whether or not incoming students’ behavior is appropriate for PTEC culture, protecting the present environment from students whose behavior is deemed detrimental to student learning and well-being.
  • Report individual student circumstances to the proper authorities as required by law and maintain supporting documentation as necessary.
  • Provide a quarterly board report on disciplinary statistics to the Principal.
  • Communicate with parents in a timely manner regarding student behavior issues, infractions and consequences.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Foster a safe, disciplined, and structured atmosphere where students can focus on their studies.
  • Ensure that students are aware of and adhere to school rules, including behavior and parking lot issues.
  • Organize and manage an annual school climate survey.
  • Coordinate drug dog searches.
  • Coordinate other preventative safety drills with the safety committee.
  • Present to faculty and staff on student-related issues during training opportunities.
  • Present PTEC expectations at student or parent information meetings.
  • Attend all school leadership meetings and team meetings prepared to interact as necessary.
  • Develop and implement ideas, rewards and programs to encourage a level of participation by the students that is conducive to a fully engaged and participating student body.
