About The Position

Under the direction of the Principal, the Dean of Students will lead the school-wide effort to create a culture that is aligned with the mission and core values of the school. S/he is responsible for proactively encouraging and supporting students to engage in positive behavior and engaging families in furthering their child’s education. The Dean of Students will partner with the school teams to ensure that all students show achievement gains and develop strong character skills. Additionally, s/he coaches a portfolio of teachers and facilitates high-impact professional development for staff as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree preferred
  • At least three years of teacher experience with exceptional results, strong instructional skills, and strong classroom management skills
  • Previous experience in leadership and managing adults is preferred
  • Experience working with youth and families in low-income urban communities
  • Proficient with technology including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Valid teaching credential or certification

  • Proactive and hands-on strategic thinker who enjoys tackling challenges and overcoming obstacles
  • Focus on a systems-oriented approach to student, classroom, and school culture

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Principals to establish a positive, structured, safe, achievement-oriented, and creative school culture
  • Serve as the point person for behavioral crisis-intervention and acute behavioral issues
  • Ensure that behavioral expectations and school culture standards are met inside and outside of the classroom
  • Invest the scholars in caring deeply about their own academic performance and becoming the next generation of serving leaders in their communities
  • Lead recognition and celebration events and other school-wide culture building activities and events
  • Coordinate and implement the school-wide behavior management system with meaningful incentives and consequences
  • Conduct regular school culture walkthroughs to help staff maintain a high bar of excellence
  • Supervise school entry, breakfast, lunch, dismissal, and transitions to ensure they are orderly and positive
  • Train teachers to develop clear and consistent classroom expectations and routines
  • Directly coach teachers and observe lessons and provide targeted and actionable feedback to teachers, as requested by Principal
  • Act as a resource to teachers in their instructional practice as it relates to issues of discipline, relationships with students, classroom management, and school culture
  • Lead staff efforts to ensure all students have excellent attendance and arrive at school on time
  • Lead staff trainings throughout school year on professional development days, as requested by Principal
  • Assist teachers, students, and parents in the effective creation and implementation of individual behavior plans
  • Track and partner with parent volunteers in screening process and volunteer assignments
  • Lead and manage school-wide events with the parent volunteers
  • Conduct parent meetings and support staff in parent meetings
  • Proactively support student recruitment efforts to ensure school is enrolled at capacity for academic year
  • Build strong rapport with parents of scholars and act as first point of contact for parent questions, concerns, and feedback
  • Actively engage with community partners and organizations to implement school programs, plan events, and impact the community
  • Maintain excellent records of student behavior, both in student files and in the school-wide online data system
  • Ensure that all teachers and staff are following expectations around parent meetings and school behavioral policies
  • Track and analyze school and classroom data around attendance, uniform, suspensions, and all behavioral trends to ensure adherence to school goals and expectations
  • Maintain data related to student retention goals and results
  • Critically create incentives, systems, and initiatives based on school data as needed
  • Perform other duties as requested or required
