About The Position

The DC Transportation Manager is responsible for leading and managing a safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation operation that supports IFA branches, wholesale accounts, and inbound vendor freight. This position ensures on-time delivery performance, compliance with all transportation regulations, adherence to budget expectations, and the maintenance of productive relationships with dedicated and common carriers. This role requires hands-on operational oversight, strategic planning, and a commitment to professional, customer-focused service.

Requirements

  • The DC Transportation Manager must hold a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational background and maintain a current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) as part of the role's operational requirements.
  • The position requires strong foundational math skills.
  • Candidates must also possess a solid understanding of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and transportation laws, along with the ability to proactively identify risks, resolve emerging challenges, and keep transportation procedures up to date.
  • Proficiency in using computers and company software is essential for maintaining records, reviewing bills, and supporting daily operational functions.

Responsibilities

  • Establish delivery schedules with branches and carriers, ensuring efficient and timely service.
  • Direct and coordinate activities of local drivers to maintain on-time and efficient delivery operations.
  • Coordinate deliveries, returns, and trailer positioning to minimize freight costs and maximize efficiency.
  • Optimize trailer loading for cubic footage, weight capacity, and backhaul opportunities across branches, feed mills, and fertilizer operations.
  • Ensure fulfillment of all requirements in the Godfrey Trucking contract and maintain a strong, positive working relationship with account managers and drivers.
  • Coordinate inbound freight with vendors and maintain strong relationships with outside entities, brokers, OTR and LTL carriers.
  • Oversee direct-ship orders between branches and vendors.
  • Manage the transportation function to meet the budgeted goal of break-even performance.
  • Review freight bills and invoices for accuracy and submit necessary invoices to accounting.
  • Maintain accurate records and freight reports for ongoing analysis.
  • Analyze freight savings opportunities and cost-per-mile targets.
  • Deliver an accident-free transportation operation and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Hold quarterly safety meetings to reinforce safety culture.
  • Ensure hazardous materials are handled properly.
  • Interpret and apply instructions from written, oral, and schedule formats.
  • Ensure transportation equipment is well-maintained, including scheduling preventive maintenance.
  • Maintain fuel and maintenance records for the yard truck.
  • Ensure trailer damage is reported and repairs are completed.
  • Build and maintain a professional, service-oriented, safe, and efficient driver team.
  • Create a high level of teamwork and pride among transportation personnel.
  • Provide strong customer service to all IFA branches and wholesale accounts.
  • Communicate delivery information to customers in a timely manner.
  • Treat team members with respect and work effectively with co-workers.
