About The Position

This is a work-study position for a Day-Time Library Services Student Worker at the Seminary Library. The worker must be available to work a four-hour block of time on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, anytime between 9 AM and 5 PM. Tasks include answering the phone, typing, running errands, stamping new books, staffing the circulation desk, and organizing books for shelving. Specific duties will be assigned by the supervisor and require reporting back upon completion. Daily tasks include reading shelves in various sections (Reference, BX, C to Z), checking in with Stella Wilkins for additional tasks, transporting library materials to and from the Cataloging Department of the Walsh Library, stamping new books, rearranging new books by Library of Congress Classification number, and managing the circulation desk. At the circulation desk, responsibilities include monitoring library admission, assisting patrons with check-ins/outs, collecting fines, and sending overdue notices. Workers are also expected to report computer difficulties to Library Assistant Andrew Brenycz. Those with familiarity with library resources and research skills may assist patrons with locating materials or research topics, otherwise, Stella Wilkins is the expert.

Responsibilities

  • Be available to work a four-hour block of time on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, between 9 AM and 5 PM
  • Answer the phone
  • Perform typing tasks
  • Go on errands
  • Stamp new books with the seminary library's official stamp
  • Sit at the circulation desk
  • Put books in order on library cart for shelving
  • Report back to the supervisor after completing specific duties
  • Read the shelves in the Reference Section of the Reading Room (on Monday)
  • Read the shelves in the BX section (dogmatic and moral theology, canon law) (on Tuesday)
  • Read the shelves in the C to Z section (on Wednesday)
  • Check in with Stella Wilkins for daily tasks after reading shelves
  • Push a cart of library materials to the Cataloging Department of the Walsh Library
  • Bring a cart to the Cataloging Department to pick up and bring back catalogued materials (e.g., new books)
  • Rearrange a cart of new books according to their Library of Congress Classification number
  • Monitor who is admitted to the library at the circulation desk
  • Help library patrons with checking in or out library materials
  • Collect fines for materials returned beyond their due date
  • Send over-due notices
  • Bring library patron difficulties with computers to the attention of Library Assistant Andrew Brenycz
  • Assist patrons not familiar with the location of materials or having difficulty researching a topic (if well acquainted with library resources and research skills)
