About The Position

Under the direction of the Day Camp Site Supervisor, the LIT (Leaders in Training) Day Camp Unit Lead is responsible for leading and supporting a group of teens ages 13–15 in a dynamic camp environment. This role oversees the planning and implementation of engaging, developmentally appropriate activities that foster social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. The Unit Lead cultivates a positive, inclusive space where teens build leadership skills through hands-on training, mentorship opportunities, and supervised practice in communication, teamwork, decision-making, volunteerism and conflict resolution. This position plays a critical role in preparing participants to become future camp counselors and leaders while modeling strong character and integrity.

Requirements

  • Experience working with youth is required
  • Previous camp experience is required.
  • Individual must be 21 years of age, pass the driver consent and have/obtain chauffeurs license within 30-days of hiring.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Meets the requirements set forth by the state licensing agency.
  • Documentation of DHS clearance before starting work, and CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Safe certifications are required within 60 days.
  • Complete Blood Borne Pathogens training, Redwoods, and concussion training as required.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Ability to plan, lead, and participate in all physical activities
  • Ability to sit and stand from a seated position on the floor when interacting withchildren.
  • The capability to be outside participating for the majority of the day.
  • Must complete successful background screening and drug test for YMCA and all other off-site screenings for partnering organizations.

  • Previous leadership experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model for all youth participating in the day camp program by displaying exemplary behavior at all times with a focus on teen programing for camp.
  • Plan and deliver weekly engaging and interactive lessons focused on leadership qualities and social emotional learning.
  • Organize and lead volunteer projects held onsite at the YMCA and at offsite locations.
  • Plan intentional weekly discussions that support teens in problem solving, critical thinking, and relationship building.
  • Assist in providing meaningful program experience for teens.
  • Ensure a safe and nurturing environment; attending to the needs of campers at all times.
  • Welcome parents and campers at all times.
  • Assume equal responsibility for general housekeeping tasks. This includes bagging trash, campsite clean-up, and bus clean up.
  • Communicate with other staff regularly regarding the care of the campers.
  • Attend all pre-camp trainings for all counseling staff.
  • Have an understanding and follow all emergency procedures on the campsite and take proper precautions in keeping children safe at all times.
  • React kindly and firmly in a positive manner when disciplining children.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and appropriate relationship with all coworkers, YMCA staff, YMCA members, program participants, and the general public.
  • Consciously create a climate in camp to foster the goals and objectives of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.
  • Adhere to all regulations by State laws and requirements.
  • Follow all safety, blood-borne, and child abuse prevention guidelines.
  • Document incidents and accidents by filling out an FYI for parents, and YMCA incident Report forms, and submit them to the Day Camp Director.
  • Display character development values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and Integrity at all times.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the weekly plans with a group of children.
  • Assist in monitoring the quantity, quality, appearance, maintenance, and storage of all supplies and equipment needed for program delivery.
  • Attend all staff meetings and other activities (i.e. family events) as required.
  • Take a leadership role in interacting with youth.
