About The Position

The Group Leader is responsible for supervising a designated group of campers, facilitating daily activities, and providing leadership and support to counselors. This position requires hands-on participation in all camp activities, including swimming days, where staff will actively engage with campers in the pool. The role is highly active, involving outdoor work, physical tasks, and direct interaction with campers and parents.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older in compliance with Illinois Child Labor Laws and the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Ability to be active outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Effective leadership and organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a professional and approachable demeanor.
  • Must be able to clearly communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, to effectively interact with children, parents, and staff, and to follow and relay instructions or safety protocols.
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Ability to handle behavioral issues and resolve conflicts with a positive attitude.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Lead morning meetings with campers, reviewing rules and expectations for camp, pool, and off-site trips.
  • Conduct daily icebreaker games to foster engagement and team bonding.
  • Assist in implementing daily schedules and activities that align with camp themes and goals.
  • Prepare counselors for group activities by ensuring all necessary equipment is readily available.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator to plan and execute special events, field trips, and group projects.
  • Create and submit a weekly activity schedule for the group to the Coordinator by Tuesday at 3 PM.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Day Camp Counselors/Inclusion Aide and Counselor in Training participants ensuring adherence to camp policies and procedures.
  • Delegate tasks effectively to maintain supervision and engagement.
  • Conduct informal check-ins with counselors to provide support and address concerns.
  • Hold a Monday Group Meeting (15 minutes) with counselors: review the weekly schedule and planned activities verify camper attendance and discuss ePACT details (medical or important information) lead icebreaker activities to build connections among campers and staff
  • Address camper behavioral issues promptly and in alignment with camp policies, fostering a safe and positive environment.
  • Model effective conflict resolution strategies and assist counselors in managing group dynamics.
  • Document incidents in ePACT and collaborate with the coordinator for follow-up when needed.
  • Ensure safety procedures and proper camper-to-counselor ratios are always maintained.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for parents/guardians, addressing questions or concerns professionally.
  • Provide regular updates on camper experiences or significant incidents.
  • Maintain a friendly and approachable demeanor when interacting with families.
  • Oversee daily camper check-in and check-out.
  • Review and reference ePACT information (e.g., allergies, emergency contacts) to ensure camper needs are met.
  • Ensure counselors are aware of any critical medical or safety considerations for their assigned group.
  • Regularly check ePACT for updates or changes regarding camper needs.
  • Report daily updates, camper concerns, or incidents to the coordinator.
  • Provide feedback on staff performance and camper engagement to improve programming.
  • Participate in end of season evaluations with the coordinator of the counselors assigned to your group.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the coordinator.
  • Work with the Coordinator to adjust activities or schedules based on camper needs and group dynamics.
  • Attend End-of-Week Meetings with the Coordinator to review the upcoming week’s information.
  • Ensure all incident/accident reports are submitted to the coordinator.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly stored at the end of each day.
  • Verify that all necessary ePACT updates have been entered daily.
  • Post pictures on Class Dojo to highlight daily activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
