About The Position

MAKE SUMMER UNFORGETTABLE: Do you love working with kids? Enjoy being outside, staying active, and making a difference? The Alexandria Area YMCA is hiring Day Camp Counselors to help create a safe, fun, and meaningful summer experience for local youth. As a counselor, you’ll build relationships, lead activities, and serve as a positive role model for campers every day. At the Y, we strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility — and Day Camp is where that mission comes to life.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent (college experience preferred)
Experience working with children in group settings preferred
Experience in outdoor activities, sports, music, skits, aquatics, or recreation preferred
Must be at least 16 years old (per YMCA and state guidelines)
CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire
Strong communication skills and a positive attitude
Ability to work with diverse populations

Nice To Haves

college experience preferred
Experience working with children in group settings preferred
Experience in outdoor activities, sports, music, skits, aquatics, or recreation preferred

Responsibilities

Supervise and actively engage with a group of children
Lead games, activities, and creative programming
Ensure a safe and clean camp environment
Build positive, nurturing relationships with campers
Communicate effectively with parents and staff
Model YMCA values in every interaction
Follow YMCA policies including child abuse prevention, safety, and emergency procedures
Attend staff meetings and required trainings
Support the Day Camp Lead and Youth Coordinator as needed
